The American Kennel Club has enlarged the list of recognized dog breeds in 2015, but also during the previous years. Currently, there are a total of 184 dog breeds recognized by the aforementioned club. The 4 new dog breeds that made the list in 2015 are the Bergamasco, the Boerboel, the Cirneco dell’Etna and the Spanish Water Dog.In case of 2014, official information mentions the Coton de Tulear and the Wirehaired Vizsla as brand new types of dogs. As for 2013, there are 3 names registered in the records, namely the Chinook, the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno and the Rat Terrier.Characteristics of newly recognized dogsThe American Kennel Club is an organization that promotes purebred dogs and holds the records of every dog breed existent in the world. Dog breeds that are not recognized by them cannot participate in their competitions. The 9 types of dogs that were included in their records during the past 3 years are not very popular yet, but they actually exist for a longer period of time. Dog breeders did not cross multiple dog breeds lately in order to obtain a new one. However, there is not much information about some of these new additions to the AKC’s official list.Dog breeds recognized in 2015The BergamascoBreed history: The origin of the Bergamasco is not well known. According to some specialists, it descends from the Persian Shepherd, while according to others it is a successor of the Tibetan Molosser Shepherd. It resembles in appearance with the French Briard Shepherd, to which it is supposedly related. After World War II, this dog breed was on the brink of extinction, but animal lovers saved it.Physical description: The Bergamasco is a medium sized dog with strong muscles. It has a rather long than tall body. Its head is long and its nose is big and black. As for its fur, it is long and wavy. It comes in black, grey or with brown spots. It may or may not have white or black spots.Personality traits: The Bergamasco is a very intelligent dog, balanced, calm, patient and that likes to always have something to do. It is independent, alert and brave, as well as very connected to its family. The intelligence of this dog breed was formed over several years of natural selection. The violent or aggressive specimens that resulted from breeding were not used for multiplication. That is why the Bergamasco known in our days is a peaceful dog. Puppies play together without having any impulse of rivalry.They grow in harmony with each other and develop strong interpersonal relationships that last a lifetime. They respect each other, avoiding to irritate or to provoke each other. If they are early socialized with other dogs, or other pets, they accept them easily. However, it is quite reserved with strangers. This type of dog can become a real friend that demonstrates affection and does not execute anything under threat. It always has to understand why it has to do something in particular and it gladly does it, but in its own way.This dog is careful and reserved, constantly attending to everything that is happening around it. Although it is not aggressive, it is an excellent guard dog that does not like its territory to be invaded by foreign persons. This type of dog has a special relationship with children. Their presence arouses their ancient instincts. They are attentive to children, patient, tolerant and protective, seeking company, encouraging them and establishing a true friendship with them.Care and living: When it is just a pup, the Bergamasco does not have any problems with its coat, but when it grows older, its long fur tends to tangle. Washing this dog is only necessary during the summer because it usually takes a few days until its fur gets dry. Although it is an active dog, living in a yard is enough for it. A very good guard dog, the Bergamasco makes an excellent companion as well.The BoerboelBreed history: The origin of this dog breed is still uncertain and lost in the mists of the past. In the African language, the word “Boer” means farmer, therefore, specialists assume that it used to be a farmer dog. Some sources imply that this dog dates back to Alexander the Great, when powerful and large dogs like it were used for hunting and for fighting with other animals.Other sources report that when Jan van Riebeek arrived in the Cape in 1652, he brought with him a type of dog that looked like a Mastiff, but was not a Mastiff. In 1830 a breed similar to that we know today travelled from Cape to Gauteg.Physical description: The Boerboel is a large sized dog, solid, vigorous, well-built with a strong muscular body and graceful at the same time. It has a short head, shaped like a square and also very muscular. Its tail is thick, strong, sharp and it can be cut from the tip. As for its fur, it is short, smooth, shiny and can be beige, reddish brown, brown, dark brown or brindle.Personality traits: This type of dog is attentive, quiet, playful, brave, extremely intelligent, balanced and responsive that adapts easily and understands quickly. It loves its master and its family immensely. It is a loyal dog that tolerates harsh children games. If it is not trained to be a fighting dog, it is very peaceful, quiet, tolerant, loving and not at all aggressive.However, if it is trained to fight, then it becomes a beast, a very dangerous enemy, strong and aggressive. In addition, the Boerboel tends to accept other animals around it, including other dogs, cats and even smaller animals. Socialization is the key for these dogs that need to be taught who is dangerous and who is a friend.Care and living: The Boerboel does not require a lot of care. An occasional brushing and a bath taken once a month are enough. As for accommodations, this type of dog can adapt to the living conditions from an apartment if it is taken out for walks every day. It needs socialization and occupation because if it gets bored, then it becomes destructive.A dominant owner is best suited for this dog breed that needs to know its place. It makes an excellent guard dog, but also a great companion.The Spanish Water dogBreed history: Currently, there are several theories about the Spanish Water Dog’s origins since they are not known for sure. One theory says that Turkish merchants brought this type of dog in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula. Another theory says that it has North African origins. However, it has been known by various names, such as Perro de Agua and Perro Turco, all of which are in Spanish.In Spain, the Spanish Water Dog was used to guard flocks of sheep and goats. In time, it spread across country and it was used for hunting. Fishermen also found different uses for these dogs. Currently, they are used as companion dogs, for searching various objects, detecting bombs and others.Physical description: The Spanish Water Dog is a medium sized dog, athletic, robust and slightly longer than tall. It has a strong head, a flat skull and nose, eyes and claws of the same color. The eyes of such dog can be brown, light brown or dark brown, depending on the fur’s color, which can be black, brown, beige, white or bicolor.Personality traits: An extremely intelligent dog and well balanced too, the Spanish Water Dog is an excellent companion, dedicated to family, caring and happy, that shows strength and endurance when it is required to. Although it is suitable for families with children, they should not be left alone with it. It is the type of dog that needs to stay in shape and it should always have something to do. It is sometimes used in search and rescue missions of persons, bomb detection, drug detection, therapies, various competitions and so on.Care and living: It requires minimal care and it should not be brushed at all. One or two haircuts per year are enough for such dog. In order to stay still during the haircuts, it requires training, but that is not a problem because it is a fast learner that easily fulfills its duties. It is reserved with strangers, but it does not show shyness.The Cirneco dell EtnaBreed history: Even if this dog breed was just recognized by the AKC, it seems that it is a very old dog breed. The Phoenician merchants brought several specimens from Egypt, which were crossbred with others and result was the Cirneco dell Etna as we know it today.Physical description: It is a dog with a classic line of Greyhound. It has a triangular head, a long snout and a thin, flesh-colored nose. Its eyes are small, slightly oval and grey. As for its ears, they are triangular, large, straight and rigid. Its tail is thin and long, while its fur is fine, well attached to its body and can have various reddish colors.Personality traits: The Cirneco dell Etna is an intelligent, quiet and friendly dog. It is very affectionate and devoted to its owner, loving and patient with children and a little suspicious of foreigners who it announces by barking. It is reserved with other dogs, but it gets along well with those of the same race. It has no problems with other animals from the household, but those it doesn’t know represent a problem.Care and living: During its shedding period, its owner needs to brush its fur with a rubber glove in order to remove the dead hairs. Other than that, it does not need special care. It feels great outdoors, in a fenced space where it can run, but it can also accommodate in an apartment with one condition, namely to be taken out for daily runs. It needs socialization in order to avoid an aggressive behavior with other animals.Dog breeds recognized in 2014The Coton de TulearBreed history: Part of the Bichon family, the Coton de Tulear was brought in Madagascar around 4 to 5 hundred years ago. Tulear is the name of the port where it arrived and of the city where it became very famous among the Madagascar’s upper class. In fact, it was the royal race of that country. In our days, it is more prevalent in the US and other countries than it is in Madagascar.Physical description: The Coton de Tulear is a small dog, rather long than tall. Its head is proportional to its body, its skull quite broad and wide and its snout is fairly long. As for its eyes, they are medium sized and round. Its fur is of medium length, smooth, slightly wavy, soft, dense and often compared with cotton. It is white, but it can have cream spots.Personality traits: It is an intelligent, lively, alert, playful, friendly and sometimes a bit stubborn dog. It is affectionate and devoted to its owner, playful, loving and patient with children and friendly with everyone. It is the type of dog that loves the company of other dogs or other animals.Care and living: The fur of a Coton de Tulear should be brushed daily in order to remove dead hairs and to avoid tangling. It only needs to be washed rarely, but the hair from around its pads and ears must be trimmed regularly. When it comes to living conditions, it feels best in an apartment next to a loving family. It has a moderate level of activity and it likes to swim and play flyball.The Wirehaired VizslaBreed history: The Wirehaired Vizsla is a Hungarian dog. It used to accompany nomadic hunters who needed it for catching birds. The Vizsla was used to obtain other dog breeds, such as the Weimaraner. After the World War II, this breed was nearly extinct, but it has slowly gained ground again.Physical description: This dog breed has a sophisticated look with thin and smooth fur. It is a medium sized dog that has a light brown color. When the sun shines on such dog its fur looks almost golden. Its ears are shaped like a triangle.Personality traits: It is loving, active, sensitive, energetic and requires the attention of its owners. Americans rank it as less aggressive because it does not destroy or break things even if it is full of energy. It behaves well with children and strangers if it receives proper education. Separation anxiety is something that affects this dog breed. A Wirehaired Vizsla constantly wants to be in the presence of its owner or otherwise it starts barking. It is not the type of dog that stays quiet. It barks and growls until it get what it wants.Care and living: Regular sessions of brushing and the occasional use of a dry shampoo for dogs is all what a Wirehaired Vizsla dog needs in order to look good. It can be held outdoors when it is warmer and it should have enough space to move. However, if it is cold outdoors, it must be moved indoors.Dog breeds recognized in 2013The ChinookBreed history: A dog originating from the United States, the Chinook was obtained by pairing a Siberian Husky with a Saint Bernard Metis in 1917. It was initially created to do different types of chores, such as pulling sleds and carrying them on long distances. Although it was strong and resistant at low temperatures, it almost went extinct in 1980. Only 11 copies stayed alive. Even in our days it is a rare type of dog.Physical description: The Chinook is a massive dog specimen with muscular and long limbs, a large head, triangular ears, small eyes and straight tail. Its fur is short and very dense and it only comes in one color, namely red with a little black on its nose.Personality traits: This type of dog has a friendly temperament. It is dedicated, faithful, diligent, alert and calm. It is not too shy or too aggressive, but definitely gentle when it comes to children. It loves the company of people and it tends to suffer from separation anxiety when it is left alone for a longer period of time.Care and living: The Chinook is an energetic dog, so its owner must take it for daily runs or ensure a running space for it. In order to develop a tight relationship, it is recommended to participate in physical activities together. It responds well to positive commands rather than to harsh methods. This type of dog was used for search and rescue missions as well.The Rat TerrierBreed history: This dog breed is native to America. Although it is a rare one now, is used to be a common dog breed met in farms from America between 1920 and 1930. The name of this breed was given by the 26th American president, Theodore Roosevelt. It has originally appeared in 1820, in the UK as a result of a cross between a Fox Terrier and a Manchester Terrier and taken to America in 1910 where it was improved.Physical description: The Rat Terrier is a small, compact, muscular and strong dog breed. Its head is relatively small, its nose is black and its ears are facing up. Its tail may be long or short, depending on the specimen. As for its fur, it is short and dense and it can be yellow, red, black, white and brown.Personality traits: It is a funny and affectionate dog that tolerates children very well. It has a loving personality, but in case of danger, it barks to alert its owners. It needs training just like any dog, but it is not too stubborn or too pretentious.Care and living: The Rat Terrier is a dog suitable for active single people or for families that like to undergo different activities. It is said that it has the energy of 3 dogs in one, so it likes various games and loves to perform various tasks to keep their senses sharp.The Portuguese Podengo PequenoBreed history: The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno has the same characteristics as its medium sized and large sized Porduguese Podengos. As its name says, it comes from Portugal, more specifically from the fishing areas located in this country.Physical description: The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is a small sized dog, with medium length fur that is light brown. Around its neck, it has a portion of white fur. Its snout is long and its ears triangular.Personality traits: It is an intelligent, brave and lively dog that likes to work for its owner. It has a well-developed sense of smell, as well as eyesight and it is a great swimmer and a diver. It is obedient and very devoted to its owner. As for children and other animals, it gets along great with the first ones, but not so great with the latters.Care and living: The fur of such dog should be brushed daily and trimmed from time to time. Otherwise, it is not a pretentions dog. It can live both indoors and outdoors if it exercises properly.Conclusions for top 9 new dog typesAs seen, none of these 9 new dog types is actually new. However, since the American Kennel Club did not recognize them sooner, they are considered brand new. Most of them look quite similar to other dog breeds, but the main idea is that they are improved compared with the ones they look like.All these dog breeds would make wonderful pets and except the fact that they need to stay active, they do not require too much effort from an owner. Families can purchase or adopt any dog from the ones listed above without worrying about aggressiveness or other negative aspects.
