Dog food recalled due to possible salmonella contamination

Amidst what seems to be an endless sea of dog product recalls lately, OC Raw Dog of Rancho Santa Margarita, California announced this week that they would be voluntarily recalling over 2,000 pounds of their Turkey and Produce Raw Frozen Canine Formulation due to a potential salmonella contamination.

The recall is limited to only bags of the formula that were packaged into 6.5 pound Doggie Dozen Patties and 5 pound Bulk Bags with the lot number 1511 and the use-by date of October 8, 2015 (10/8/15). The products were distributed in Missouri, Minnesota, Colorado, and Pennsylvania. They were sold through independent specialty stores.

The recall is the result of a routine sampling by a program that the company participates in through the Nebraska Department of Food and Agriculture which has revealed a presumptive more serious health issues. OC Raw Dog has stopped all production and distribution of the product while they work with the FDA to investigate the issue.

Not only should consumers be worried about their pets, but it is possible for humans to contract the disease, so they should also be monitoring themselves. It is particularly dangerous to small children as well as frail or elderly adults.

There is extreme risk of infection to anyone that handled the food or touched a surface where the food was present, especially if proper hand washing and sanitizing were not performed afterwards. Humans should be looking for the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, or abdominal cramping.

Rarely more serious health issues can result from salmonella including endocarditis, arterial infections, muscle pain, arthritis, urinary tract symptoms, and eye irritation. If you are a consumer that handled these products and you are experiencing any of these symptoms OC Raw Dog encourages you to seek medical attention immediately.

Similar to humans, salmonella can be detrimental to canines as well. If your dog was exposed to any of these products monitor them closely for these symptoms: lethargy, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. Other symptoms include a drastic decrease in appetite and abdominal pain. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog was exposed to these products.

Pets and humans that may seem healthy but have contracted the disease can easily infect others. These recalls should be taken very seriously and your pet should be monitored for 7-10 days before dismissing the threat of infection.
