Many pet owners don’t bother worrying about something that seems so trivial, but it’s actually very important that you don’t let this hair get too long. Think of all the debris that could get built up in that fur if you leave it long.

The fur on your dog’s paws is just as likely to get matted as the fur on the rest of his body. Mats pull the fur tight, causing pressure on the dog’s skin that results in pain. Not to mention, if he has anything built up in that hair he has to step on it every time he walks.

How To Remove Hair From Dog Paws

Learning how to remove hair from dog paws is actually quite simple. Just remember to go slowly and be very careful. Working so closely to your dog’s paws opens the door for a lot of opportunities to cut the pads of his feet.

As you’ll see in my video guide, you can either use scissors or a small pair of clippers to remove the hair from your pup’s paws. I prefer to use clippers because they are much safer than scissors.

Since you’re cutting so close to the skin and the pads of the feet, there is a good chance that you’ll accidentally cut into your dog with a pair of scissors. It’s not impossible to cut him with clippers, but it is much less likely.

You’ll need to hold your dog’s paw firmly in one hand and use dog hair clippers or scissors with the other hand. As I demonstrate in my video guide, you’ll need to gently spread the toes apart to clip all the hair in between.

Clip the hair until it is level with his pads or slightly below the pads. This will prevent any matting or build up that could occur. You don’t want to cut all the hair away though, as it does protect the skin between the pads.

When you’re just trying to learn how to remove hair from dog paws, not only should you trim the hair between the pads, but also the hair between the toes and any long hair on the top of the paws.

If your dog is uncomfortable with you touching his feet, you’ll need to gradually get him used to it. Touch his feet without using any dog grooming tools. Try to do it when he’s tired and resting. Reward him with treats for allowing you to hold and massage his paws.

Once he is comfortable with you touching his feet, you can begin getting him used to the grooming tool that you’ll be using. Again, reward him with praise and dog treats when he is calm and allows you to groom him. It’s essential for successful grooming in the future.
