One thing that dog owners don’t always consider is what they will do if their dog escapes the yard or house. Some dogs are highly prone to wandering (take the Beagle for example, who will follow his nose literally anywhere until they find the scent) and that can be scary.

Not only does that put your dog at risk for things such as being hit by a car or ending up in the pound, but they are also likely scared and not quite sure where they are. It is also a stressful situation for you as the pet owner who is searching for a lost family member.

There are several things you can do to prepare for such an incident – even if it is unlikely it can still happen. Just remember the old saying: expect the best but prepare for the worst. In cases like this it is really all you can do.

DogTelligent Review: The Smartest Smart-Collar Around

dogtelligent collar reviewRemember when you were a kid and all you wanted was a dog? Then your parents would continuously remind you that a dog is a big responsibility and you need to be prepared to take care of it properly? Yeah, me too.

Nowadays, there are many different bits of technology that will allow us to keep a better eye on our pets – one of the most recent and creative being the smart collar. There have been several different types of these collars, most offering a simple GPS in case of lost pets.

Then you have the DogTelligent – and it really does take smart-collar technology to a whole new level. Unlike traditional GPS collars, this one doesn’t simply help you locate a runaway pet. The DogTelligent also has a handful of features you will not find anywhere else.

Along with the GPS features that many dog owners have learned to love, you can also monitor your dog’s health and activity levels. You will have access to things like whether they are sleeping, walking, running or even if they get too hot or too cold.

This is especially helpful when you have a senior dog who needs more tending to for optimal health. It is also useful if your dog is pregnant or has other health concerns – although it is just as handy for any dog owner wanting to ensure the best for their dog at all times.

The collar also has a couple of different handy training features. If your dog is stubborn about learning his or her commands then this could be a safe and effective way to train your dog. The collar uses ultrasonic sound waves and vibrations to help train your dog.

There is even a speaker on the collar itself that allows you to talk to your pet from anywhere! So logically, if you worked on it enough times, you could tell your dog it’s time to come inside without ever leaving your living room! (You may want to consider a doggy door!)

You will also find that this collar has LED lights that will make it easy to find your pet in the dark. This is especially useful if your dog gets out at night as it will make it easier for people in cars to see your dog before anything bad can happen.

The collar comes in three different sizes, small medium and large – and it is adjustable as well. The material is water resistant so even if your dog takes an unexpected dip in the pool or a lake you can feel comfortable knowing the collar will still be intact and working!

Unlike other smart-collars or GPS collars this one is not bulky – and it comes with a lot more features too! There is even a virtual leash and fence technology built in to help keep your dog in your yard, even when you don’t have a physical fence to do so.

If you were looking into a smart collar, then this is definitely the way to go. The collar has some of the best features on the market (and some features are exclusive to this collar!) and keeps charged for 7-14 days with quick recharge times.

It really is the best way to help you keep your dog healthy, happy and safe at all times.

Why You Should Consider a GPS Collar

While microchipping is a great option it still relies on someonegps collar picking up your pet and a vet scanning them for the chip. Plus if you ever forget to update the registration on the chip there is a chance this chip will not make a bit of a difference.

However a GPS collar (generally used on medium and larger dogs as the collars are too heavy for small breeds and cats) can be the perfect solution to this problem. The collar will have a GPS device on it and depending on the model you get the ability to find your pet is simple.

Some GPS collars are more advanced than others – some simply show you a relative location and others can bring you turn for turn right to where your dog is in real time. These collars are especially great for dogs who are known escape artists!

What to Look for in a GPS Collar

Depending on your budget there are a lot of things to look for in a GPS collar for your dog. The biggest thing to consider is price as you can only buy what you can afford – but if you can afford a more powerful model then it is probably in your best interest to do so.

Once you have determined how much you can afford to spend on this piece of equipment you should take a look at the different designs. The first thing you want to know is whether or not it will be a good fit for your dog’s size.

Unfortunately some of the collars are heavy and can be a burden on smaller and even some medium sized breeds. If you have a large dog then this will not be much of a concern as they will more easily be able to carry the extra weight on their neck.

You will also want to look into the range of the GPS (how far it will track your dog), battery life (how long does it last and how long does it take to charge – or do you use replaceable batteries) and especially the accuracy of the GPS tracker.

Tractive GPS Tracker

tractive collarThis GPS is perfect for many dog owners and is not too over-the-top with the price as some can be. If you are looking for something simple that will work say, if you leave your dog in a fenced yard and want to know if he digs his way out.

The GPS works with the device in conjunction with your smart phone. It runs on cell towers for a signal allowing it to easily be tracked as your dog roams. This is not the most accurate GPS with step-by-step movements but it sure will help you find your dog in a pinch.

Along with the app on your phone you also have the ability to turn on a small light on the device to find your pet in the dark if they will not come when you call. The only real downside is that you may not always be able to pin-point your pet – but you will find their general location.

Tagg Pet GPS Plus

taggA little less expensive than the Tractive GPS the Tagg Pet GPS Plus is another great option, especially for those on a budget. It works in a similar manor to the Tractive in that it runs on cellular GPS signals allowing you the ease of tracking your pet anywhere, any time.

The “locator” for this GPS is an app as well – however if you do not have a smart phone you can still get regular SMS (text) message notifications if your dog leaves the “safe zone”. This GPS also uses maps and directions to get your to your pet as quicly as possible.

This GPS is about as accurate when it comes to finding your dog as the Tractive and it comes with a slew of other features as well. Along with being a GPS it can also track air temperature letting your know if your dog is too hot or too cold.

On top of that it can also measure your pet’s activity and rest giving you a beautiful insight to your dog’s overall behaviors and health!

Tristar Mini GPS Pet Collar

tristar collarThis collar is much smaller than the others and is the only one on the list that will work nearly perfectly for a smaller breed of dog. This collar runs on cell towers and works cooperatively with a smartphone app like the first two models we discussed.

This collar uses gast GPS location return on texting the device or the option for 3-second signals sent to provide a full route – both of which provide exact locations to Google Maps, and lead you right to your pet.

The tracker can be located or monitored by SMS, the internet, and by mobile app for both iOS and Android.

In the end each product does its job well and will be able to lead you to your missing dog in a little to no time at all.

The Best GPS Collar For Hunting Dogs

Garmin Astro 320 T5 Dog GPS Bundle

garmin gpsWhen hunting, the cute little collars that the city dogs wear are not going to do you much good. What you need is a collar with a strong transmitter that does not rely on cell towers.

When we were kids we had radio collars on for our hounds. The downside with radio collars is that you have to stay in range with the dogs… and on a good hunt it can be a little nerve-wracking to stay in contact. (Which of course, was part of the fun of it!)

With a GPS collar, you have a satellite connecting you and your dog. This makes it so much easier to stay in contact with them and guarantees that you can always find the game…. and the your hunting pal home with you at the end of the day.

Even though it uses GPS to track, you are limited to about a 9 mile range. So it’s still limited like the classic radio collars in the that regard (only with a lot more range). It alerts you when the collar leaves the designated safe zone, so you are always keenly aware of where they are.

There are a few downsides and work-arounds that you need to be aware of.

First of all, this is a bigger collar. If you have a big beagle (30lb+), it might work with them, but you might want to go with one of the micro collars GPS offers, instead. So definitely more of a hound-dog type of collar.

Additionally, the battery life is a concern. Most folks find that they need to buy a high-end rechargeable battery instead of using the ones that comes with it. With better batteries you should get an easy 4 hours of run time.

Finally, don’t forget that you may want to buy and download the software pack with the more detailed map of your area. I know I really like having a better overlay of where the streets are in relation to where I am with the hounds.

Sure, there are cheaper GPS collars out there, but it is hard to find one that consistent. And since I don’t like having to retrain my dogs (plus, they are my friends and it stresses me out when they are gone overnight), it is well worth the extra money for this one.

Basically, consider it a “lifetime investment”. A little higher upfront cost, but it pays for itself on the backend.
