How To Choose Healthy Dog Treats

Your puppy or dog isn`t going to be getting most of his nutritionfrom treats, but the ingredients are still very important, andthe `rules` that apply to making the best puppy food choices hold true for choosing dog treats too.

You don`t want to fill your pup full of `junk` and artificial stuff, you want to see healthy, wholesome ingredients!

Ingredients you want to see in healthy dog treats......

Natural or organic ingredients
Whole grains
Single high-quality protein sources (meat/fish)
Natural preservatives

Age-appropriate or health-condition appropriate formulas
`Puppy` treats or `Senior` treats
Look for special treats suitable for dogs with diabetes, arthritis or those who are overweight etc.
Older dogs or very young puppies may prefer soft treats, others love the crunchy ones

`Extra` ingredients
Some of the best healthy dog treats are fortified with added vitamins (suchas Vitamins A or E) or contain Omega fatty acids, Glucosamine andChondroitin (for joint health) etc.
Treats especially designed to help freshen breath or clean yourpups` teeth are good for occasional use, but shouldn`t be used astraining treats.
Treats with a low calorie count are healthy, and good for puppies and dogs of all ages!

Ingredients to avoid.....

  • Salt

  • Sugars, including fructose

  • Syrups, molasses

  • Artificial flavorings, colorings or preservatives

  • Ingredients that tend to cause allergies in dogs such as wheat, soy or corn
