This rescued dog repaid the favor in the most incredible way imaginable

Video: Heartbreak, hope and healing: A Young Mother's Adoption Story

We often hear stories about humans helping dogs, but the truth is, our four-legged friends often come to our rescue as well, reminding us how to love and live openly and savor each moment.

Badger is an 11 year-old Lab-Rottweiler mix who was abandoned in the woods of Ontario as a puppy. Over 10 years ago, Derik Hodgson, an outdoor enthusiast and photographer, noticed what he thought was a baby bear near his Elgin, Ontario cabin. Upon realizing it was in fact a dog, Hodgson embraced Badger and took him in. The two have been inseparable ever since.

The best friends have a noticeably special bond. They even take advantage of the surrounding weather by skiing together! Incredible. But this friendship isn’t just fun and games. Badger, who can be seen in the video below wagging his tail in delight while simply sitting near Hodgson, makes it a point to look after his human, just as he looks after him.

On a freezing February day, the pair took an impromptu trip to a nearby lake so Hodgson could photograph some eagles flying overhead. After taking an awful fall onto the iced over water, he was helplessly vulnerable, leg broken, not properly clothed for the cold weather. Amazingly, Badger took charge of the situation and quickly retrieved help for his dear friend. This story is truly incredible. It’s no wonder Badger was honored as member of Purina’s Animal Hall of Fame. Such a well deserved recognition. Hear the whole story below!

It gives me chills to think of how in tune with his owner Badger was to be able to react so quickly and, essentially, save his owner’s life. Do you know a dog who has acted heroically and saved the day?
