A pair of 9 and 10-year old sisters from Alberta, Canada owe their lives to a very special 4-legged hero and his owner! The young girls were tobogganing near the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton on Sunday afternoon  when they ended up on the thin ice of the still-frozen riverbank.

Rocky, an 8-year old Lab/Husky mix and his owner, Adam Shaw, 27, were in the right place at just the right time to save the young sisters from certain tragedy. Adam was walking his dog Rocky near the river when he heard screams coming from the riverbank. When he spotted the girls, one of them was in the freezing water while the other tried to pull her sister out.

By the time he and Rocky reached the girls, both were in the water. Adam quickly pulled 10-year old Krymzen from the river, but 9-year old Samara was being pulled downstream by a strong current.

Unable to move her arms or legs, probably due to the extreme cold, Rocky was the girl’s only hope. The brave dog leapt into the river, letting Samara grab hold of his leash, and pulled the girl to shore.

Officials say that in only 2 more minutes in the freezing water, both girls would not have likely survived.

“If that man and dog weren’t there — I just try not to think of it,” Miranda Wagner, the mother of Samara and Krymzen, said in an interview with CNN affiliate CTV.
