Recall alert: barf diet brand frozen raw lamb & combo patties

It has been brought to our attention by TruthAboutPetFood.com, that BARF DIET brand raw lamb patties and combo patties for dogs are being voluntarily recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination.

BARF WORLD alerted customers to this recall through their newsletter, by email, and via written letters. Though no illnesses to dogs or humans have been reported, BARF voluntarily recalled the products in an effort to maintain the health and safety of pets and pet owners.

Please see the letter below that BARF WORLD sent to retailers of the raw food for dogs:

This is to inform you of a voluntary recall involving BARF DIET brand which includes our BARF Lamb Patties and BARF Combo patties as noted below:

Please be aware that this is a voluntary recall for potential Salmonella and BARF World has received no reports of illnesses from pet owners or pets on the above-mentioned frozen raw diet product, which was manufactured on 07/27/2012. None of this product has been tested and found positive for salmonella.

Since BARF World routinely produces its products in small batches to maintain freshness and shelf life of the product, this voluntary recall involves only the small number of cases and diet varieties listed above.

There are no other varieties of our diets or sizes involved.  Out of an abundance of caution due to the potential of Salmonella, the recalled product should not be fed to your pets. You may have received this product by ordering directly from BARF World.  The product can be identified by the Use By date of 072713.

Please check your freezer and dispose of any unopened or unused product and contact BARF World for a full refund.

This product  (23 cases of Lamb Diet) was shipped to you from York Cold Storage over 2 shipments on October 18th, 2012 and September 28th, 2012 for further distribution to your customers. The product can be identified by the Use By date of 07/27/13.  Please immediately examine your inventory and segregate/quarantine any product that is subject to recall.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

In an effort to prevent the transmission of Salmonella from pets to family members and caregivers, the FDA recommends that everyone follow appropriate pet food handling guidelines when feeding their pets.
