When guests at the Red Mountain Resort in Ivins, Utah go on a guided hike of the nearby canyon, they’re given a truly awesome opportunity to bring one of the dogs from the nearby Ivins Animal Shelter along!

The Pound Puppy Hike Program was started about 10 years ago by one of the resort’s hiking guides who also ran the animal shelter.

The Pound Puppy Hike is perfect for anyone who misses their four-legged best friend while away on vacation. After greeting the dogs at the Ivins “No Kill” Animal Shelter, guests enjoy a 1.5 mile hike with them at the base of Red Mountain. The hike lasts about 2 hours and is exciting for both the dogs and the humans that get to take them.

And, sometimes a Pound Puppy Hike ends with a new family member! About 70 dogs and even some cats have found homes with the people that took them hiking at Red Mountain.

So, next time you’re planning a trip out to Utah, how about taking a hike with a shelter dog? (Maybe bring home a new family member, too!)
