What You Need to Know About Canine Caviar
As dog owners, we’re always concerned about what type of food we put in front of our pooch. These vittles should nourish their body so they can live long, healthy lives. One particular dog food, Canine Caviar, takes a holistic approach to delivering pooch nutrition. But what does this mean?
A Brief History on Canine Caviar
Canine Caviar is the dog food creation of Jeff Baker, the company’s founder and CEO, as a means to curb his Great Dane Moguls’ violent reaction to bug bites. The holistic dog food he created not only stopped the reactions from happening, but it also helped him live to the ripe old age of 17 years old. Considering the average Great Dane lifespan is just 7 to 10 years due in part to its massive size, Moguls’ life is more than slightly impressive.

Canine Caviar and its Ties to an Alkaline Diet
Canine Caviar is marketed as an “alkaline dog food.” While that sounds very impressive and scientific, it may not mean anything to the typical consumer. So why is the concept of an alkaline dog food important?
Essentially, an alkaline diet is one that governs your dog’s pH levels in his body. This level is measured on a 0 to 14 scale, with 0 to 7 being considered acidic and 8 to 14 being considered alkaline. It has been noted that a dog tends to derive improved health if their pH balance is closer to alkaline levels.
Most commercially produced dog foods on the market, however, tend to carry pH levels that are on the acidic side. While acidic foods are not entirely bad, too much acid in the diet can start creating health issues within the dog’s body.
One of the big issues that have been tied to an overly acidic diet involves the formation of kidney or bladder stones. If a dog is particularly prone to developing calcium oxalate stones – the stones caused by acidic foods - an acidic-heavy diet could exacerbate the problem. This could cause rough issues for your pooch, from an inability to pee to suffering great pain.
An alkaline diet, such as the one that Canine Caviar creates, is a great way to restore pH balance in your pooch. It can also mitigate or even prevent other types of chronic conditions that your dog could experience. Some of these conditions include arthritis, hip dysplasia, thyroid disorders, and respiratory problems.
An alkaline diet also has a tendency to promote the amount of oxygen that is present in a dog’s blood. This increase helps restore a balanced metabolism and increase aerobic activity in the dog, the latter of which could slow down your pooch’s aging process. It is also thought to slow down the formation of cancerous tissues, which tend to be acidic in nature.

The concept of “too much of a good thing” applies to alkaline foods. If you aren’t careful, a diet that drifts too far into alkaline territory could create a different type of health issues for your pooch.
In fact, some of these issues could end up looking similar to issues that could happen with an overdone acidic diet. For instance, too much alkaline could create what are known as struvite bladder stones which could cause an equal amount of issues as oxalate stones.
Because of this, Canine Caviar’s foods are designed to maintain a pH balance between 7 and 7.5. This more or less strives to maintain the same pH balance of water (which is 7) in your pooch’s body. This number puts your four-legged friend in the type of healthy balance that will make the development of certain issues far less likely.
What Ingredients are in Canine Caviar?
A lot of the ingredients that you’ll see in a bag of Canine Caviar are considered highly desirable in dog food parlance. Ingredients that are rich in nutrients such as kelp, brown rice, and whole ground flaxseed are present in the formula. These are joined by quality proteins such as buffalo, duck, and chicken.
These ingredients not only help to restore pH balance for your pooch, they also help to do a lot of the other things that you would normally look for in a dog food. For instance, the dog food is known for its ability to keep a dog’s dry skin nourished and his coat healthy.
What if I Make My Own Alkaline Diet at Home?
There are different foods you can use in order to create your own alkaline diet for your dog. This homemade approach consists of natural raw foods with a particular emphasis on vegetables. Some of the foods typically featured in this kind of diet include alfalfa, bananas, beans, potatoes, and cruciferous vegetables like cabbage and broccoli.
Additionally, a liquid approach to creating an alkaline diet could work. Natural apple cider vinegar, cranberry juice, and vegetable juices have all been shown to increase dietary alkaline levels.
The only downside to this approach, of course, is that if you aren’t careful, you could end up swinging your dog’s pH level to overdone alkaline levels. If you do this, you could end up doing more harm to your pooch than good. If you go this route, be sure to work very closely with your dog’s vet in order to prep for this type of diet.
The Price of Canine Caviar – It May Be Worth it!
Because Canine Caviar is a specially designed food – one may even say it’s artisanal dog food – you can anticipate spending a bit more than you would for the type of food you can get at the grocery store. This may induce a little sticker shock, and it may cause you to think twice about picking up a bag.
However, you should realize that any special dog food that emphasizes an aspect of canine nutrition like Canine Caviar is going to be relatively expensive. Because of this, it’s wise to prepare your budget for spending a few extra bucks on a product like Canine Caviar. In this case, the long-term benefits – read: a healthier dog – far outweigh the short-term savings.
