Video: How Can I Help My Dog's Muscle and Joint Pain?
Discomfort and reduced mobility can be issues with dogs, and if untreated, can lead to behavioral problems. These problems can include sensitivity to touch or petting, anti-social behavior and resistance to walking. I am called upon to help solve behavior issues when the real problem is often untreated pain and reduced ability due to wear-and-tear or injury.
I experienced this first hand when my pit bull Daddy was getting older. First he suffered arthritic joint pain and then cancer reduced his mobility to only a few steps. We did everything to help Daddy including acupuncture, pain pills, and massages. It really hurt to watch him slowing down and having problems getting around.

At that time, the idea of giving dogs supplements with glucosamine and chondroitin to deal with joint discomfort was fairly new and untested. Glucosamine and chondroitin are basically calcium derived from a variety of resources. When my vet looked into studies published by the National Institute of Health designed to find out whether these supplements had any effect on arthritis, I learned that glucosamine and chondroitin in humans were no more effective than a placebo. Studies on dogs also showed little benefit to the use of glucosamine and chondroitin.
