Tips on How to Reduce Cat Meowing

  • Get Your Cat Spayed

Many times when a cat reaches sexual maturity around 5-6 months it will meow as a result of going into heat. A cat in heat may be quite a spectacle. The cat will insistently meow at the door, become more affectionate and may typically position herself into a mating position. The meows of a cat in heat, can be very frustrating, they most likely resemble howls as if in pain, some people compare them to a baby crying. Spaying the cat will resolve this annoying situation and prevent unwanted litter of kittens.

  •  Feed Appropriately

If you feed meals that are too small, your cat will take the task of reminding you every moment you approach the kitchen or the refrigerator with insistent meows. If your cat permits, try to keep the food dish full, so the cat will be able to have access every time she/he gets a craving. Cats are grazers, they like to feed frequently as they please. However, this may not apply to all cats, as some tend to over eat when they are left free choice of food.

  • Ignore

Some cats are attention grabbers. They will meow for attention and will not stop until they get it. The best way to stop this is by ignoring the cat and giving attention only once it quiets down.

  • Invest in Cat doors

Many cats will meow insistently to be let out. Then once out, they may meow to come back in. For peace of mind and quiet, try to invest in a cat door. This way your cat will go in and out as it pleases without the need to meow.

  •  Check for Pain

Every time a cat meows for no apparent reason it is best to exclude the possibility of the cat being in pain. A thorough body inspection may be helpful, however, it is best to have your veterinarian do this to exclude many possible pain conditions.

  • Senior Moments

Senior cats may start howling in the night, while they are O.K for most of the day. This may be a sign of a condition similar to Alzheimer’s disease, known as Feline Cognitive dysfunction or Feline Alzheimer’s. The howling is often caused by the cat becoming disoriented and getting lost in the home. They may howl until their owners will provide comfort. If this is the likely scenario, consul with a vet as there are medications (Anipryl) that may help slow down the progression.

A cat meowing is the equivalent of a human talking. Very likely, your cat is trying to say something. It is ultimately up to the owners to figure out and effectively translate what the cat is asking for.
