It is a fact that some cats tend to shed more than others. Of course, long haired cats will appear to shed more because they have furrier coats and their hair is longer. However, even in domestic short hair cats there seems to be some that tend to shed much more than others. Below are some tips on how to deal with that furry mess found just about anywhere in your home:

  • Provide a good diet

Cheap cat foods found at most supermarkets will not do any good to a shedding cat. Many premium diets instead may offer many good supplements that are beneficial to the cat’s coat and skin. You will need to look at cat foods containing omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. Supplements may also be a great addition, ask you veterinarian about supplementing your cat’s diet with helpful vitamins and minerals.

  • Brush, brush and brush

Nothing helps reduce hair loss more than brushing your cat’s coat. Your cat will also bond with you, as many love to be brushed and cared for. A new product called the “furminator” may be a great product to invest in to see much less hair around. If your cat has long hair you want to equip yourself with some mat removing tools and take care in removing those mats. Slicker brushes may also be helpful in removing those dead hairs.

Is hair everywhere? On your chairs, jackets, sofa? Try to use a pick up roller. These are sticky rollers that effectively will pick up hair that stick to it. You may find it a very helpful tool. Many veterinarians and staff use these rollers quite often between a vet visit and another. You may also preserve your furniture by tossing throws on them so when guests come over they can be put away quickly. A great vacuum for owners of shedding pets is Dyson. These effectively pick up hair because they have a very strong suction and the hair does not tend to get tangled within as other vacuums.

Shedding does not necessarily have to be a problem. As with most things in life, if you learn how to manage it, you will not have a problem. However, refrain from doing any of the above and you may easily find your home covered by layers and layers of unsightly hairs.
