Fungus medicine for cats

Fungus medicine for cats is available to treat all types of cat fungus, including ringworm, yeast infections and other systemic fungal infections. Some fungus medicine for cats is available over-the-counter, while some can be purchased by prescription only. Treatment of fungus with topical ointments, creams, capsules, sprays or dips will depend on the type of fungal infection, and the symptoms being treated.

Topical Creams

Ringworm is a common fungus in cats. Topical creams can be very successful in treating ringworm. Creams can be applied to the affected skin area to cure fungal infections. It may be necessary to shave the affected areas for treatment to be productive. Be aware that fungal spores are contagious and can readily spread. Be sure to clean the area, and any instruments used for treatment. Prescription only, as well as over-the-counter topical creams are available for treating most mild or moderate fungal infections.

Anti-Fungal Sprays

Anti-fungal sprays are another type of fungus medicine for cats. Sprays can be used for treating ringworm or yeast infections of the skin or ears. Anti-fungal sprays are available by prescription or over-the-counter and can be easily found online or at your local pet store.

Shampoo, Baths and Dips

Fungus medicine for cats can also be purchased in the form of shampoo, anti-fungal baths or dips. Depending upon your preference, and the preference of your cat, a bath with an anti-fungal shampoo or dip may be more effective, as it will cover the entire body quickly. In the case of a yeast infection of the skin, a dip or shampoo could be a faster way of healing and curing your cat of fungus caused by ringworm or yeast infections.

Oral Medication

Oral medication, usually in the form of capsules, can be administered for the treatment of fungus in cats. Occasionally, oral medication is used in combination with topical treatment or anti-fungal shampoos. If the fungus does not improve within a month of using topical creams, sprays or dips, or if you have a long-haired cat with a severe fungus of the skin, capsules may be more desirable. Oral medication is normally given for fungus of the nails as well. Generally, you will need a prescription for oral anti-fungal medication.

Itraconazole

Systemic fungal infections are often more serious and require more aggressive and long-term treatment. Itraconazole is a fungus medicine often used to treat severe fungal infections such as blastomycosis, histoplasmosis and onychomycosis, which may affect the brain, bones or lungs. Itraconazole is usually administered by capsule or oral solution. In more severe cases, itraconazole can be given intravenously. This drug is off-label, meaning it is not approved by the FDA for use on animals, however it is legally prescribed by many veterinarians, as it is an effective treatment of many kinds of fungal infections, and does not have many of the adverse side-effects seen in other more aggressive fungus medicines for cats.
