Treatment of yeast infection starts with identifying the underlying condition responsible for immune-suppression. Once identified the condition should be treated along with the Malassezia yeast.
For the yeast itself, 1% chlorhexidine shampoos and benzoyl peroxide-containing or sulfur-containing shampoos are usually used to create an environment unsuitable for the growth of the yeast. Shampoos with ketoconazole as the active ingredient may as well be used. Miconazole creams can as well be used to treat small spots.
Oral medications and injections may also be administered for severe cases and in the event that topical treatments fail.
