If your dog often has a bad case of gas, you may be hoping that Beano can work for them. But is it really something that can also work effectively and safely for dogs?
Gas in humans is usually explainable. We tend to eat a lot of different foods knowing which ones give us gas. People take a Beano dose prior to eating things like cruciferous vegetables including broccoli or cauliflower. With a dog though, they should be primarily eating their formulated dog food.
As such, a recurring gas problem could be a sign that something else is wrong. If that’s the case then Beano certainly isn’t the answer. In fact, it’s usually not a good idea to treat just symptoms in dogs. Actually, that’s also true for humans but we won’t get into that here. Just know that you could be masking something in your dog that merits more attention.
Can I Give My Dog Beano? Answer: Not Recommended
Beano works proactively and if your dog already has gas, you won’t be doing them any favors by giving them some.
Further, providing a dog Beano before they eat is also not a good idea. The enzymes it contains are made for the human digestive system. There are some specially formulated products which are similar to Beano, but they are for dogs. You can get them from your vet, online or from pet stores.
However, this is not typically something that they should need. If they are getting the right sort of food on a daily basis, all things equal, then very bad gas doesn’t occur very often. The cause of chronic gas needs to be figured out, preferably with a vet’s diagnosis, in order to rule out and ultimately eliminate such a condition. This is better rather than introducing something new, such as Beano, into your dog’s system.
Give Them the Good Stuff
Prevent your dog from getting gas by feeding them specially formulated and quality dog food. Don’t buy the stuff that is dirt cheap at the supermarket. Dogs need good dog food and anything outside of that will cause them stomach irritation including too much gas.

Beano is also not the cheapest thing on the planet. Giving it to your dog while feeding them low-grade dog food or table food isn’t the most economical or smartest thing to do.
A much better approach is to be preemptive and put your hard earned money into the best possible, vet-recommended dog food you can find. That should alleviate most of the stomach problems they experience. You may also see an almost immediate and noticeable difference in their energy levels. Using Beano isn’t going to achieve that!

The shininess of their coat and their zest for life will also improve. If you’ve never given your dog the premium stuff, try that strategy first as you may be surprised at what a difference it makes.
Explaining Your Dog’s Gas
You may be able to determine why your dog has terrible gas, as they naturally shouldn’t. If it’s a regular occurrence that remains unexplained, ask your vet about it the next time you take them in for a checkup.
If it’s a once in a while thing, you’ll probably be able to pinpoint it to some table scraps you fed them. It could also be linked to a time when they got loose and may have ended up eating something they shouldn’t have.
Better Alternative to Beano
Sticking to daily feeding times is important. Your dog’s digestive system will get used to it, and produce the juices necessary to break down the food properly. If you feed them at sporadic times, or some days once and other days multiple times, their system won’t be able to find any pattern. They’ll likely be left with undigested food that can result in lots of bad gas.
By remaining consistent and developing a pattern you should be improvements. Also, by feeding them a top quality brand of dog food, you’ll definitely be doing them a favor.
