Low Maintenance Dogs

It’s a lot of hard work to care for a pet when there’s always something we need to be doing. That’s why it might actually be best to go for a lazy dog breed when you’re considering a dog. Now, when we say “lazy,” we don’t mean it badly.

In fact, lazy dog breeds are sometimes preferred because of how low maintenance they are. Many breeds don’t require a lot of grooming and are easy to train, which means you don’t have to take as much time out of your day to keep your eye on them. Some are little couch potatoes who sleep a lot and might just sit with you, and are so mild mannered that you’ll find it’s easy to have them around with you. There are even breeds that top the healthy list to make vet visits easy and less frequent. Not all dog breeds have all these qualities, but you’ll find that even some of these will make your life as a pet parent much easier!

The 10 Lazy Dog Breeds You Need

Lazy dogs are definitely low maintenance, but remember they still need some love and care! No matter which dog you get, you’ll need to walk them, feed them and care for them. Some dogs are just easier than others, and here are the 10 types of breeds which fit the bill.

The English and French have the best Bulldogs

We can all imagine bulldogs with their short little legs and flat noses. Bulldogs might seem large but honestly, they just like to rest. They prefer to spend their time inside and are one of the best lazy dog breeds that don’t shed and require little grooming. If you have kids, they’re even considered one of the best breeds for little ones.

The Beautiful Life of the Shih Tzu

Some people think Shih Tzus will bark at all hours of the day, but despite the luxurious coat and high amount of grooming required, they’re actually quite calm. Due to their small size, they prefer it indoors and can be trained well. Be aware that they may be a little more alert than others, and might just take to following you around for their exercise. These little guys definitely will clamor for your attention.

Chow Chow

Believe it or not, the Chow Chow is actually quite a large dog. Unlike larger dogs like retrievers though, this guy will prefer lazing around in your nice cool apartment. They have a lot of fur after all, and won’t like to run around in the heat. They are a little aloof though and are sometimes compared to cats in attitude. If the cat’s attitude is the reason you don’t want one, this dog might not be for you.

Spaniels Everywhere!

Spaniels are generally medium to small in size, but instead of being “yappy” dogs, they’re fairly personable. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel only yaps if you don’t train him, and only needs small little playful episodes each day. The Japanese Spaniel, otherwise known as the Japanese Chin, is also very alert and lovable and needs some good training, but is perfect for your lap.

Finally, the English Toy Spaniel is a little easier to train and groom and rarely misbehaves. They do like to bounce around indoors every now and again though. All of these dogs except for the Toy Spaniel require a medium amount of effort when it comes to grooming, but they’re so small that it shouldn’t be too difficult.

Mid-size, Mid-effort: Basset Hound

This medium to large dog is quite interesting, although the Basset Hound is a little on the large side. The Basset Hound is actually really active when you get him going outdoors and needs some real time outside, but they do get along well with other animals and are pretty calm afterwards. A short walk will keep this breed golden.

Pugs and Puggles

These two small guys are pretty similar, mostly since the puggle is a crossbreed of the pug and beagle. Both breeds are tiny breeds and need little training, exercise, and grooming. They do actually shed more than you’d think though, even with their short hair. They’re the perfect lazy dog breeds for apartments, if you don’t mind cleaning up a little fur.

A Smaller Cutie: Miniature Pinscher

It’s possible that you’ve always wanted a big dog, but just can’t see yourself really caring for something larger. Not to worry! Some smaller dogs fit the bill just fine too. The Miniature Pinscher is a perfect lazy breed for the apartment with its tiny size and little to no grooming. Just be careful not to lose him when he’s sleeping!

All the Terriers

Terriers are perfect in general, but there are a few different types that you could choose from. The Boston Terrier is kind of like the Bulldog since they like to stay indoors and rest. The Skye Terrier is really adaptable as a breed, so if you’re the type of person with lazy days and active days, this dog will be perfect for you. Finally, the Rat Terrier is friendly too and gets along with pretty much everyone. Like other terriers, just give them a small walk or run around the yard and they’ll be good.

The Mighty Chihuahua

We couldn’t leave out the Chihuahua. They’re actually the smallest breed of dog in the world! They take up little to no space, but may not be best for smaller kids in your house. Yes, the rumors are true: Chihuahua’s are definitely a little high strung sometimes. They don’t require much grooming though and only minimal walking, so they’re easy to care for.

Large Dogs?

Some people just can’t imagine themselves without having a large dog, and you might be surprised to find that some large dogs are just as lazy as the little guys! The Bullmastiff is definitely pretty big and will need the space to move around, but they don’t need a lot of training and are a great lazy dog breed that doesn’t shed much. You might be even more confused when you see the Greyhound on this list! Sure, they’re a racing dog, but they don’t require excessive exercise. They’re even good for allergies due to their short coat. Great Danes are probably the most active of the large dog breeds, but still only might need a few laps around the yard. Like the others, they have short hair and are easy to care for, making them just a little easier to handle than the Chow Chow we talked about earlier.

Lazy dog breeds aren’t ‘bad’ dog breeds. In fact, lazy dogs might just be the perfect pet for busy owners who just can’t get around to grooming and walking multiple times every day. These dogs will be just as happy walking around as they are sitting beside you on the couch. They’re perfect for pet lovers and with the right amount of care and attention they won’t ever want to leave your side.
