12 Refreshing frozen treat recipes for your dog

Summer is the perfect time to make your pup some cool treats – and bonus – some of these you can eat yourself!

#1 – Watermelon Freezy

This recipe was created by Dr. Ernie Ward, a member of Petplan’s Veterinary Advisory Board. All you need is 1 cup watermelon and 1 cup ice cubes. Blend them together until smooth and then pour the mixture into a safe, freezable toy like a KONG or ZogoFlex.

#2 – Fruit Slushie

The above recipe can also be used as a ready-to-serve slushie. Simply blend it, and then put it in a bowl or in a KONG to have an immediate thirst quencher for your hot hound. You can also substitute the watermelon for blueberries or bananas if your dog prefers those instead. Feel free to enjoy this yourself, though you may want to add some sugar to your half if you like things a bit sweeter.

#3 – Bahama Mama

This recipe won the KONG Connect Recipe Contest. It was created by Nina Garcia from Orlando, Florida. It combines 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut, 1 cup granola (no raisins!), ½ cup pineapple and ½ cup peanut better. Get the recipe here.

#4 – Frozen Peanut Butter Banana Pops

Another recipe from Petplan, this one needs: Three 6-oz. containers of plain, low-fat yogurt, ½ cup of low-sodium peanut butter, one 4-oz. jar of banana baby food (or a small ripe banana), and 1 tablespoon of honey. Blend all ingredients well and pour into small paper cups (like Dixie). Put a dog bone in each one to act as a handle. Freeze and then peel away cup to serve!

#5 – Carrot-Sicles

Most dogs LOVE carrots so this recipe is a no brainer! Fill an ice cube tray or Dixie cup (depending on size of dog) halfway with water. Fill remainder with low-sodium broth (chicken, beef, fish). Put a piece of carrot (baby carrots work great for ice trays!) in each as a handle. Freeze, peel away cup if necessary and let your pup enjoy!

#6 – Breath Garnishes

Why not cool your pup down while helping dispel doggy breath? Fill ice cube tray ¾ of the way with water. Mix a few peppermint leaves or a couple drops of pure peppermint oil with a sprig of parsley and add to each cube. Freeze. Put a few cubes in your dog’s water.

#7 – Simple Sorbet

This recipe from Petplan is super simple too! Take an ice cube tray and dice banana, carrot, apple or blueberries. Fill the ice cube tray halfway with water and then add the fruits and/or veggies and freeze. Once frozen they are ready to serve!

#8 – Frozen Dinner

When it’s really warm, a simple way to cool your dog off (and keep him occupied!) is to just feed him his kibble frozen. Soak it in just enough water (or low-sodium broth!) to cover about half the kibble. When the kibble has absorbed most the water, stuff into a KONG or other freezable treat toy and freeze.

#9 – Soft-serve Yogurt

Who doesn’t love soft-serve yogurt on a hot day? To make this treat, take: three 6-oz. containers of plain, low-fat yogurt, whatever additives you want (low-sodium peanut butter, fruits, peppermint, veggies) and blend well. Leave in the bowl and freeze until it’s semi-hard. Take out and whip with a hand blender. Serve to your dog in his bowl, stuff-able treat toy or put it back in the yogurt container. This is one you could eat too, depending on what you put in it (blueberry would be amazing!).

#10 – Frozen Parfait

This fun treat will keep your dog interested as he discovers each new flavor! Decide what you want to use as your layers. Things like low-fat plain yogurt (you can add fruits!), shredded carrots in water, low-sodium peanut butter, blended bananas with a drop of honey–all of these are great ideas. Put your first layer in an empty yogurt cup or KONG. Freeze until almost hard. Add next layer, freeze. Repeat until you have made all your layers and/or filled your cup or KONG.

#11 – Apple Freeze

For this recipe you are going to need: ¾ cup apples, ¼ cup low-sodium peanut butter, and 1 cup ice cubes. Blend in blender until well mixed. Freeze in KONG or Dixie Cups.

#12 – Carob Chip Ice Cream for Dogs

This recipe comes from the DogTreatKitchen.com. If you haven’t checked her site you – you’re missing out! All this recipe takes is two 6-ounce containers of plain yogurt (low or nonfat), 1 Tablespoon honey, 1/3 cup of carob chips. Mix in a bowl, pour into paper cups or ice cube tray and freeze.
