Veterinarians typically prescribe acepromazine for dogs for sedation- it is commonly given to dogs who experience uncomfortable car travel, anxiety,motion sickness and, in some cases, to provide relief from scratching or itching. Acepromazine is also called promace for dogs, which is effective by causing a drop in blood pressure by depressing the CNS (central nerves system) in dogs.

Acepromazine Brand Names

Brand names for acepromazine are promace, aceproject and aceprotabs.

Dosage for Dogs

Aceproject for dogs is available in tablets (5mg, 10mg, 25mg) and injectable form (10ml/mg). Typical acepromazine oral dosage is 1 to 3 mg/kg (0.5 to 1.5 mg per pound) and injectable dosage is 0.02 to 0.2 mg/kg (0.01 to 0.1 mg per pound). Caution should be used and injectable dosage should not be more than 3mg. Also, oral dosage is larger in quantity compared to injectable dosage.

Side Effects of Aceproject for Dogs

A dog on acepromazine can experience side effects such as increased heart rate, lowered blood pressure, allergic reactions, swelling of tongue, lips, hives and face, depression, sedation signs, slower heart rate and incoordination.

Precautions:

Caution should be used when giving acepromazine to dogs with allergic reactions to medicines.
Veterinarian should be informed if your dog is lactating, pregnant or suffering from seizure disorders, liver disease or heart disease.
Take extra care to keep you dog warm, as acepromazine can lower the body temperature.
Consult a veterinarian to know if acepromazine could interact with other drugs that your pet is receiving for possible risks.
