Azithromycin for cats provides powerful antibiotic medication for infections. The medication kills bacteria like staph and strep.

Zithromax is the brand name for antibiotic medications containing azithromycin. The medication is developed for human use, but it`s become a popular medication for pets because of its effectiveness. The macrolide antibiotic comes in liquid or tablets.

Diseases Treated with Azithromycin for Cats

Veterinarians prescribe azithromycin for use in cats with severe ear infections, chronic upper respiratory disease and the herpes virus. Chlamydia and gum disease also respond well to azithromycin. Though you may have azithromycin on hand, do not use it without first asking your veterinarian. Dosages are exact, so it`s important to know how much medication your cat can safely handle.

Side Effects of Azithromycin

While the FDA has not approved azithromycin for cats and dogs, veterinarians find the benefits outweigh any dangers. Key side effects include abdominal pain, cardiac arrhythmias, diarrhea, impaired liver function and vomiting. The impaired liver function often leads to jaundice, yellowing of the skin, gums and eye whites, so be sure to check your cat`s eyes while on the medication. Call your veterinarian if you believe liver impairment is occurring.

You should not use azithromycin or Zithromax for cats if your cat has liver or kidney disease. Cats with allergies to antibiotic medications should not take these medications.
