Big, scary “guard dog” gets daily visits from an unlikely friend

There are big dogs that are gentle giants, small dogs that are feisty protectors, and everything in between. It’s also a cliché that dogs guard their homes against mailmen, who they consider to be strangers invading their turf (and must be chased away!).

But when one mailman met a German Shepherd along his route–a dog that is often misunderstood for being vicious–he decided to give him a chance. The two struck up an unlikely yet adorable friendship, and now, the mailman makes sure to visit his furry friend every time he passes!

“Every day whether or not we have mail, this mailman always stops to see my dog who is only 9 months old. He always gets overlooked as a dangerous or unapproachable dog,” wrote dog-dad Michael Collins on Facebook. “But this guy here always makes an effort to get off his bike to give him a hug and a pat!”

It seems that both canine and mail-carrier look forward to their daily meetings.

“Thanks man, keep up the good job and you’ve definitely got a friend waiting for ya!!” Collins added.

Lucky for us, one of their visits was caught on camera!

Just look at that tail wag! (And the dog looks happy too...just kidding!) We love that this mailman knows not to judge a dog by its breed stereotype, although all strange dogs should be approached carefully. It’s no wonder that seeing each other is the highlight of their days!
