Meet Killer, the Belgian Malinois…but don’t let his name fool you! The only thing this pup is “killing” is these poacher’s paychecks! Because of his work, he received the honorable PDSA Gold Medal, presented by Ricky Gervais.
You see, Killer has helped lead to the arrest of more than 115 attempted African Rhinoceros poachers within Kruger National Park, located in South Africa. With his handler, he flies into the park on a helicopter to target and capture potential poachers.
Rhinos are hunted for their horns, which are worth a hefty price tag. Because there is a concentration of them in the national park, poachers often hunt their prizes on its land- of the 631 slaughtered in 2014, 408 of them were killed in Kruger.
The award was given to Killer by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), an organization that funds veterinary care for sick animals in the United Kingdom, and was presented by funny guy and fierce animal activist, Ricky Gervais. Only 24 other recipients have been given this prestigious honor since the charity’s establishment in 1917.
In the video below, you’ll hear some beautiful words about Killer’s contributions, as well as some amazing things about this pup’s personality. When he’s off-duty, the handler considers him “one of his babies.” When he’s working, this focused dog risks his life to save rhinos…and even, at one point, his handler, when a poacher shot at him:
