Treating puppy worms properly

Video: Dog Worms -Treatment of Dog Worms

Treating puppy worms the right way is really important because not only can do they make your puppy feel awful & uncomfortable, they can also make him very sick!

Puppy being dewormed by veterinarian

Many pups are born with Roundworms (passed onto themin their momma`s bloodstream or milk), and several other types of wormsare transmitted by contact with external parasites.

A few intestinal worms aren`t something to panic about as in theshort term they`re not going to do any real harm, BUT they do need to betreated to prevent complications or illness.

There are wormmedications available over-the-counter, generally in large pet stores, but it can be `hit and miss` to useone of these.

This is because unless you`re absolutely certain what type of worm your puppy has,you could be targeting the wrong ones.

OTC de-wormers are not as effective, and generally not as safe, as the products your veterinarian can prescribe or administer.

There are two brands of dog dewormer that you can buy online which are safe and effective, plus some natural alternatives (although these won`t be as effective as a main-stream product and shouldn`t be used for a severe infestation).

You can learn all about these on my Dog Worm Medicine page

Most vets will routinely treat a puppy for dog worms at the same time as giving him his puppy vaccinations.

It`snot a `one-off` treatment either, generally the dewormer will need tobe given 3 times, at 2 or 3 week intervals.

This is to make sure thatthe worms in ALL stages of development are eradicated properly.

Afterthis, unless your pup shows symptoms of a new worm infestation, he willusually only need to be treated once a year, when he gets his annualvaccination booster shots.

An Ounce Of Prevention

Although not, strictly speaking, a method of treating puppy worms, prevention is key to keeping your puppy safe from all sorts of parasites.

Because worms can be spread by contact with fleas and mosquitoes,it`s very important to protect your puppy from these annoying littlebugs.

Using a reliable and safe flea/tick medication on a monthly basis is the best way to make sure these biting critters don`t set up home on your little one!

There are lots of products to choose from and literally something for every pup/dog.

Preventing heartworms isn`t just important, it`s absolutely critical because these worms can kill a pup or dog quite easily and by the time symptoms of an infestation show up the pet is already very sick.

Giving your pup a heartworm preventative such as Heartgard every month will keep him safe and give you peace of mind.

Some types of puppy worms are picked up by your puppy from the soil, or from eating the feces of infected animals.

A puppy who is sick, whose diet is poor, or whose immune system is weak is a prime target for parasites... not to mention dangerous viruses and bacteria as well.

Here are some ways in which you can protect your puppy from worms:

  • Keep an eye on him when he`s outdoors and discourage chewing or eating rocks, dirt or sticks.
  • Keep him on a leash when you`re out and about so that he can`t sniff, lick or eat another dog (or animals) feces.
  • Make sure your puppy is fed a nutritious diet by choosing a premium puppy food which contains the right balance of ingredients.
  • Ensure that vet visits are scheduled (and kept) to take care of all vaccinations and deworming.

Tohelp keep your puppy`s digestive and immune systems in tip-top shapeyou can give him a natural supplement which will make sure he gets the vitamins, minerals and enzymes that he needs tokeep his digestive system strong and clean, and support his immunefunction too.

Here are a couple of the very best products on the market, ones that I would recommend.....
