Your vet may suggest to you Resortin Ointment (or one of the many alternatives using the same active ingredients Nystatin, Thiostrepton, Neomycin + Triamcinolone). If you’ve never heard of it, you’re not alone – but once you know about it you won’t try anything else for issues like this!

What is Resortin?

Resortin is an antibiotic, antifungal and corticosteroid ointment in a gel form. It can be used both directly on skin and dripped into ears as needed. This is a great medication as it can be used in so many different situations.

Some dogs need this ointment for dry ears or ear infections – in certain breeds this is actually a common issue and it’s good to have a simple treatment like this one. (Especially if you’re going to need it often!)

Along with treating ear infections it is also highly effective at treating skin infections from things like a deep cut or scratched open flea bites that have become infected. This is one of the easiest and most effective solutions to fighting an infection as soon as it’s found!

This is a prescription medication, which means you do need your vet to prescribe it whether you plan to buy it directly from them or another vender whether online or in person.

How Much Should I Use?

Dosage is a tricky question as it depends on the severity of the condition. For mild conditions you may only need to apply the ointment to the infection site once or twice a day for a few days.

On the other hand for more severe conditions it may take two to three applications a day up and up to a week to totally clear out the infection.

You should look to your vet for the most accurate dosage information. What is right for your pet’s situation, age, weight and health is going to be completely different than the next one.

This is true with any prescription medication – you can only trust package instructions so far. For things that give a wide range of dosage with few parameters to go off of, talking to your vet beforehand is always the best solution.

Since your vet will need to prescribe this medication in the first place, they should advise you on proper application before you leave the office!

Once you apply the medication you should massage the area to ensure the medication gets where it needs to go. If you miss a dose, give the missed dose right away – unless it is almost time for the next dose as you should never double dose this medication.

As for ease of use, the gel is so easy to apply it’s not even funny. It’s just like dripping Neosporin onto your knee when you scrape it. For ears it is easy to get a couple drops in the ear canal. This makes life easier for everyone – after all, who likes medicine anyway? At least it’s simple!

If you were concerned about whether or not to give this to your dog due to a sensitive stomach or a similar issue you should know that most dogs are completely fine when taking this medication.

Any adverse side effects are generally due to an allergy to one or more of the active ingredients. Those side effects are extremely rare and usually only consist of irritation or redness, increase in thirst, urination and appetite, vomiting weight gain and more.

Resortin may not be a good fit if your dog is currently pregnant or nursing, have a ruptured ear drum or if they have a deep skin infection or abscess.

Overall, unless your dog falls under one of the category’s I just mentioned or has an allergy to one of the active ingredients, Resortin Ointment is a great antibiotic and antifungal gel that will have your dog’s infection cleared up in no time!
