Two More Dog Foods Being Recalled for Possible Salmonella Contamination

It’s no wonder pet owners around the world are fearful of the products that they use on their dogs and the foods that they feed them. There have been numerous recalls this month alone and they keep piling up. Now we have word of two more dog food companies who are recalling products due to the potential for salmonella contamination.

Nature’s Variety announced a voluntary recall on their Instinct Raw Chicken Formula for dogs that has a “Best By” date of 04/27/2016. The date can be found on the back of the package below the seal. The affected products are limited to the Instinct Raw Chicken Formula Frozen Diets with the following information on the label:

UPC# 769949611431 – Instinct Raw Chicken Formula Bites for Dogs 4 lb.- Best By 04/27/16
UPC# 769949611448 – Instinct Raw Chicken Formula Bites for Dogs 7 lb.- Best By 04/27/16
UPC# 769949611486 – Instinct Raw Chicken Formula Patties for Dogs 6 lb.- Best By 04/27/16

The affected products were distributed through retail stores in the U.S. and also through limited distribution in Canada. The company wants to assure consumers that no other Nature’s Variety products were affected. No illnesses have been reported yet. The company became aware of the issue after receiving notification from the United States Food and Drug Administration that a routine surveillance sample of the product tested positive for salmonella.

Also this week, Bravo Pet Food of Manchester, Connecticut is recalling select lots of their Bravo Chicken pet foods for cats and dogs for the same reason. The problem was brought to the attention of the company after routine testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture revealed the presence of the bacteria.

Bravo Pet Food says that all the products tested negative by a third party independent laboratory prior to distribution to consumers. No additional products were affected, and the company has not received any reports of illness in either animals or humans yet.

The following product is being voluntarily recalled due to possible salmonella contamination:

Bravo Blend Chicken Diet for Dogs & Cats – Chub- Item # 21-102- Size-2 lb. (32 oz.)- Best Used by 12-05-2016- UPC-829546211028

105 cases of the product were sold to distributors, internet retailers, retail stores, and directly to consumers in the United States.

These products DID NOT test positive for salmonella, but they are being voluntarily recalled because they were manufactured in the same facility on the same day as the products that did test positive.

Consumers should not use these products and if they already have they should take their pet to see a veterinarian immediately. Humans can also be affected by salmonella, so anyone who bought these products should monitor themselves closely and see a doctor if symptoms begin to arise.
