Maternal dog busts out of her boarding kennel to comfort scared foster puppies
A pair of 8 to 10-week old foster puppies were spending their first night at the Barkers Pet Motel in Alberta, Canada. Although the babies were recently rescued, their future’s finally bright, the duo were scared and confused in their new, unfamiliar surroundings.
Maggie, who had recently been adopted from the Humane Society, was also spending the night at the Pet Motel.
Sandy Aldred, owner of the boarding and foster facility, had left to grab a bite to eat when she used her cell phone to check the facility’s surveillance cameras when she noticed Maggie had escaped from her kennel. Aldred watched as Maggie wandered around the facility until she found the puppies.
“We watched her on the cameras and she went straight around and she found their room. She paid them a lot of attention and you could see her little tail wagging. And she’d do the little bow down to them and poke them through the chainlink gate of their room. She just decided that was where she was going to stay until we came to get her,” Aldred told the CBC.
When Aldred returned to the pet motel, Maggie greeted her excitedly before leading her straight to the puppies’ kennel.
Aldred let Maggie inside to visit with the puppies where it quickly became clear that she needed a little puppy love just as much as they needed a little comfort.
Maggie stayed with the puppies, cuddling and comforting them, through the night, until her owners returned in the morning to pick her up.
The Barkers Pet Motel often boards animals from local rescues and shelters when a foster home isn’t available. The two puppies had just been rescued by the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society and hadn’t yet been placed in foster homes. Both are currently available for adoption.
And, thanks to one very special dog with a loving, maternal heart, they knew comfort and love on their first night of the rest of their happy lives!
