Stop killing snoopy – the slaughter of beagles in america
I’m sick.
No, it’s not what you think – I’m fine. I didn’t eat anything bad over Thanksgiving.
I’m sick because one of our readers told me about a company she accidentally found on the internet. A company that is selling beagles and beagle parts for research.
Think of Snoopy? The dog everyone loved from Peanuts.
Now think of a company called Bioreclamation.
These people sell Beagle parts.
Want a beagle uterus, beagle spleen, beagle stomach, beagle spinal cord?
All we have to do is kill another Beagle in the name of research.
They raise these beagles is cages until someone calls the company and says, “I need some Beagle skin.”
Beagle skin grows on…beagles.
And there’s only one way to get the beagle skin.
It involves killing Snoopy.
So I did a little bit of research myself and do you know what I found out?
(It will make you sick, too.)
Researchers like to use beagles for research for the same reason people like to have them as family pets: they are friendly, trusting, docile, and eager to please. I’m not a beagle, but I’m kinda the same way.
Imagine what kinds of monsters are keeping hundreds of beagles in cages all their lives to test things like mascara on them!
I found pictures of restrained beagles forced to chain-smoke cigarettes through face masks.
At the University of Pennsylvania, beagles were bred specifically to have a certain eye disease that makes them go blind. These 3-week old puppies had their eyes cut out and dissected and then they were killed. If that wasn’t bad enough, when the results of the research weren’t what the fellow had hoped for, he lied about them. All those puppies died for nothing. That made me sick.
Sometimes they take out the dogs’ vocal chords so their barks and cries don’t disturb the lab technicians.
More than 75,000 dogs are used for research each year in the United States alone.
And it’s legal. Can you believe it?
In fact, animal research is not only legal and protected by the federal government, but it’s required! Reputable animal research facilities work with the USDA and have to follow strict policies.
Still, I found this video of beagles that were rescued from a “reputable” lab. They had never been outside, never stepped foot on grass or seen sunlight. They were terrified to leave their cages – the only homes they had ever known.
Those beagles may not have been beaten or starved, by law they wouldn’t be considered abused. But in my opinion, they were definitely mistreated if they never left cages their entire lives!
So what can you do about it?
Well, like I said, testing on beagles is perfectly legal (gulp) but you can do me and my beagle friends a favor by using products from companies that don’t test on animals! Some of them print a leaping bunny logo on their packaging. Click here to find a list of cruelty-free products.
And there are beagle rescue groups, who work with these laboratories to find suitable homes for retired research beagles:
Beagle Freedom Project
Beagle Rescue League
Cascade Beagle Rescue
