Description

The Bergamasco Sheepdog, also referred to as Bergamo Shepherd Dog or simply Bergamaschi, is a breed of medium-sized, compact dog that originated in Italy. It belongs to the herding breed family which is popular for their outstanding ability to control the movement of other animals. Bergamascos were initially used as herding dogs. Their uniquely abundant coat forms long mats or flocks. Coat colors can be anything from gray to anthracite. It serves as a camouflage when the breed is out to work in the mountains.

Height and Weight

The male members of the Bergamasco Sheepdog breed normally stand a height of 23 ½ in at the withers, and weigh about 70 to 84 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, are slightly smaller with a typical height of 22 in, and a weight of 57 to 71 lbs.

Temperament

Bergamasco Sheepdogs, in general, are a strong, brave, and highly intelligent dogs. They are a sound, peaceful canine with a well-balanced temperament. The breed is attentive and reserved- constantly participating in almost everything that goes on around them. Although Bergamascos are not innately aggressive, they still make excellent watch and guard dogs as they dislike intruders. They get along well with children, and are known to be patient, tolerant, and protective with them. The breed is also great with other dogs and household animals especially when they have been socialized well early. Bergamascos are not a pet for everyone, but with the right handler, the breed can be a real pleasure to own. They need an owner who can show a natural air of authority over them. A firm yet gentle leadership approach is necessary to keep them manageable.

Grooming

Bergamasco Sheepdogs are not demanding when it comes to grooming care. They only require brushing and bathing on an occasional basis. They are considered to be minimal shedders.

Bergamascos are generally a healthy breed. As a matter of fact, they have an average life expectancy of 13 to 15 years.

Best Environment

Members of the Bergamasco Sheepdog thrive best in areas with seasonal to cold climates. Because of their dense coat, the breed is usually found to spend their nights outdoors. They are not suitable for apartment-living, but would do well in dwellings with access to a yard. Taking these shepherd dogs out for long walks everyday, or letting them romp around with children would be highly necessary to can keep them happy.
