Kuvasz

Description

The Kuvasz, also called as Hungarian Kuvasz or Kuvaszok (the plural term), is a breed of bold, massive dog that originated in Hungary. It belongs to the working breed family which is notable for their being outstanding in carrying out jobs such as guarding property, sled-pulling, and or water-rescuing. Kuvasz dogs have been bred to become reliable companions and livestock guardians. Their moderately long double coat could either be wavy or straight, and is thick underneath. Coat colors only come in white and ivory, and their skin tends to be heavily pigmented.

Height and Weight

The male members of the Kuvasz breed normally stand a height of 28 to 30 in at the withers, and weigh 100 to 115 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, are relatively smaller with a common height of 26 to 28 in, and a weight of 70 to 90 lbs.

Kuvaszok, in general, are fearless and very courageous dogs. In fact, they have been observed to be more than skilled at protecting their home and master. Nonetheless, they are not bred to become guard dogs similar to how other lines are. As reliable livestock guardians, Kuvaszok tend to be rather independent as well as decisive. These large dogs are capable of thinking for themselves, and can readily decide who or what they think could be a threat. More often than not, the breed is polite yet aloof with strangers. Kuvasz dogs are not the typically cuddly type. Although they are loyal and devoted, the breed does not display affection as often as many other breeds do. Nevertheless, Kuvaszok can get along well with other canines and pets. They bond well with children, though may have the tendency to become overly protective with them. Early socialization and proper training are very necessary to keep these dogs stable-minded. They are best suited for experienced handlers.

The breed’s long coat needs regular brushing for shed-control. To keep their coat oils from getting removed, owners are encouraged no to bathe Kuvaszok too frequently. For families living in cooler climates, Kuvasz pets tend to shed on a seasonal basis. However, those who reside in warmer climates have reported that their Kuvaszok shed all throughout the year.

Health Concerns

Some of the common health complications linked to the breed include skin allergies, hip dysplasia, osteochondrosis dessicans, and hypertrophic osteodystrophy. Nonetheless, with proper care, nutrition, and exercise, the Kuvaszok can have an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years.

Because Kuvasz pets can bark a lot to signal warning, they are hardly ever suitable for apartment living. The breed does best in a living environment with access to a large yard. Kuvaszok prefer cooler climates, and would require vigorous physical and mental stimulation every day.
