Description

The American Pit Bull Terrier, also known as Pit Bull, is a popular breed of medium-sized, sturdy dog that originated in United States. It belongs to the Terrier breed family which is notable for their distinguished personality and hunting skills. Pit Bulls have been bred for the purpose of protection and hunting. Their smooth, rough coat comes in any color except for merle.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the American Pit Bull Terrier breed commonly stand a height of about 18 to 22 in, and weigh approximately 22 to 110 lbs.



Temperament

Pit Bulls, in general, are good-natured and amusing dogs. They are friendly, very loyal, and affectionate toward their family owners. The breed is also known to bond well with children, though should never be left alone with unfamiliar kids. They are very obedient and very eager to please their masters. Pit Bulls are courageous and smart guard dogs. The breed typically tends to become extremely protective of their owners and the family property, that they will fight an enemy even to their death. They do fine with other animals when they are socialized properly at young age.

Grooming

American Pit Bull Terriers are generally easy to groom. They require regular brushing, and need to be bathed or dry shampooed as needed. To retain their coat’s shine, owners are encouraged to use a piece of towel or chamois onto their smooth hair. The breed is considered to be a moderate shedder.

Health Concerns

There are quite a few health problems associated with the Pit Bulls. Some of these include allergies to grass, hip dysplasia, hereditary cataracts, and congenital heart diseases. Nevertheless, with proper care, diet, and exercise, the breed can live for as long as 12 years.

Best Environment

Members of the American Pit Bull Terrier generally do fine in living in an apartment- provided that they get to receive sufficient exercise. The breed tends to be extremely active indoors, and will do okay for homes with no yard space. Pit Bulls prefer dwelling areas with warm climates. In terms of exercise, the breed shall have a lot of regular exercise, and must be taken on daily long walks.
