In 1974, Joe Camp wrote, directed, and produced an amazing movie about a stray dog named Benji that helped to rescue 2 kidnapped children. Benji was a huge success, adored by fans around the world. Four sequels, many television specials, a Saturday morning show, a comic strip, and nearly 40 years later, Joe’s son, Brandon Camp is bringing Benji back to the silver screen.

With the help of veteran animal trainer, Mark Forbes, Camp is scouring the country looking for the perfect Mutt to play the famous role. The Seattle Times described the dog Camp is looking for:

It’s a mutt — mischievous, medium-sized, scruffy and street-smart with soulful eyes. Comfortable as hero or underdog, yet likely to be a stray. Must be a fast learner, able to charm millions and willing to work for food.

Camp hopes to evoke the spirit of his father’s original Benji movies with his new adaptation, telling The Seattle Times, “Parents and grandparents will recognize the spirit of Benji,” he said. “He was always a mutt and will always be a mutt. He is the everydog.” He says he’ll immediately know he’s found the right dog just by looking into his eyes.

Camp and Forbes are hoping for another positive outcome from the film. Historically, when a dog stars in a movie or television program, there is a big lift in adoptions of that type of dog. They hope that by featuring a stray dog, more people will head to their local shelters to adopt Mutts.
