Dog discarded with old couch is about to celebrate his first anniversary in his forever home!
Video: Abandoned Dog Finds a Forever Home
In January of 2015, a family in Phoenix, Arizona cleaned out their house as they moved, leaving an old couch on the curb…along with the family dog.
After they’d left, a neighbor came home to see the lonely three-year-old Pit Bull, named Brownie, nestled in the haphazard cushions of the couch, waiting for his family to come back for him. But they were already long gone.
As a new family moved into the house, the presumably bewildered neighbor asked if the dog happened to be theirs. They said it was not, but had not moved from its spot on the couch the whole day.
“I guess the old owners had left him there,” the neighbor said in a story by ABC 15.
The neighbor kindly tried to find a family who’d care for the dog, but to no avail. She eventually had called Maricopa County Animal Control, but snapped a picture of the depressed dog before they scooped him up. Once she posted it online, it began to go viral.
“We’ve been inundated with calls, people, rescue groups, people that want to step up and help,” Melissa Gable, a member of the animal control, told ABC15 in the aforementioned story.

When the Arizona Humane Society heard the story, they stepped in and cared for Brownie for about a month.
As luck would have it, the Pittie found a new home just in time for Valentine’s Day…and he has a new couch to lounge on! But this time, the couch is indoors, and his family likes to snuggle on it with him. As new owner Ted says in a news segment by Fox 10, “He likes to lay on everybody.”
Ted says he loves Pit Bulls and when he saw the picture of poor Brownie on Facebook, it touched his heart. He went searching for the lonely pup in area shelters, with the intention of taking him home. And unlike Brownie’s former owners, his new family is thrilled to have him.
Upon adoption, the pup was renamed Butkus after the former Chicago Bears linebacker. And this Valentine’s Day, Butkus will be celebrating his one-year anniversary with the new loves of his life!
As for the previous owners, they were facing a misdemeanor charge at the time of this story. Let’s hope Judge Cicconetti is enlisted to dole out the sentence!
