An 11-month-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever was missing for 43 days after being hit by a drunk driver…but has now been reunited with his owner!

On December 13th, police officers in Orange, Massachusetts witnessed Chessie get hit by a driver who was under the influence of alcohol. The dog was in his own driveway, and the car was on the wrong side of the road. Luckily, the driver was caught and charged- but the hurt and frightened pup disappeared into the nearby woods.

Despite frequent searches, Chessie was nowhere to be found. “Scores of citizens, firefighters and police officers have looked out for him since this day- Some even walking out into the woods on their off time to help,” wrote the Orange Fire Rescue EMS on their Facebook page.

After being gone for several nights in the dead of a New England winter, it was assumed that the pup had died. But a few days ago, a community member saw Chessie about a mile from his home, and he was reunited with his family after being missing for more than six weeks! Miraculously, the dog found a way to sustain himself while enduring snow storms, bitter wind chills, and frigid nights plummeting far below freezing.

Unfortunately, the retriever was not completely unscathed- his hip got injured in the accident, and having gone weeks untreated, he faces multiple surgeries and rehab. But that didn’t stop this amazing survivor from jumping into the warm bed of dog dad John Greenwood once he finally arrived home!
