Life hasn’t been the easiest for Emily Reimer. At 9-months-old, she was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder called Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA). DBA is a bone marrow disorder that prevents the body from producing adequate red blood cells. Reimer, now 19-years-old, has gone through countless treatments in her lifetime. She was on steroid treatments until the age of 13, at which point she began receiving blood transfusions. Last year, she went through a bone marrow transplant and open heart surgery.

She has been hospitalized since this time and it hasn’t been easy for Reimer or the rest of her family. Although she enjoyed visits from the hospital’s therapy dogs, Reimer was unable to see the dogs she loved the most – her own. During the year and a half she was hospitalized, Reimer developed a staph infection and was placed in isolation for her safety. This lead to a terrible downfall in her spirits, and her mother knew she had to plan a visit with their own dogs when the doctors allowed it. Thankfully, this heartfelt visit was finally permitted and Emily Reimer and her dogs were able to be reunited. “There was sheer joy on her face when she saw them,” her mother told ABC News today. “It seemed like it was a little piece of home having them come and see her. It had been a long time.”

Emily Reimer is in much better spirits now and we wish her the best in her recovery and treatments throughout her life. Only a miracle can truly change the situation (and we have hope that there’s one out there!) but being able to see her dogs certainly made a positive impact in her life. “Emily loves animals, period. So it was very helpful to her morale to have her dogs there,” Emily’s mom said. “Being inpatient, it gets hard to keep her going and keep her spirits up. It gave her a little bit of new life. I was happy to see her happy.” We’re glad to see Reimer share her newfound health with her family – two- and four-legged.
