Back in January, we shared the heart-wrenching story of Jethro, a police dog (and beloved family companion) who was shot and killed in the line of duty.

The K9 and his partner, Officer Ryan Davis, responded to a call in the middle of the night about a suspected burglary at a grocery store in Canton, Ohio. There, Jethro was shot three times, resulting in brain trauma. He passed away the next day.

The world was touched by the K9 officer’s heroism, and devastated by his tragic death. His funeral was well-attended, bringing in officers from all over the nation who wanted to pay their respects.

Almost 8 months later, Jethro’s killer has finally been sentenced to some serious time behind bars.

Twenty-three-year-old Kelontre D. Barefield has plead guilty, “to charges related to Jethro’s death and several other counts stemming from four earlier burglaries and an unrelated aggravated robbery,” reports CantonRep.com. This also includes shooting at two other police officers on the scene the night that Jethro was shot.

All those charges have added up to a 45-year prison sentence for Barefield.

CantonRep.com also reports that the plea deal almost fell through because Barefield was unhappy with his legal representation, saying that his defense team had only taken on the case for the money.

Out of the 45-year sentence, only 6 years make up the penalty for Jethro’s murder–the state’s maximum sentence for shooting a police dog. But the case has forced lawmakers to rethink the penalties for murdering K9 officers. CantonRep.com reports that, “The dog’s death also led state lawmakers to introduce a bill that would make the penalty for killing a police K9 harsher.”

While 6 years is a minuscule price to pay for the slaughter of an officer, human or canine, we’re glad to see that Barefield has been slammed with a fairly harsh prison sentence, overall.

Rest in peace, brave Jethro. Your sacrifice will serve as a catalyst for justice, and you will never be forgotten.
