Thanks to social media–and a complete stranger–this veteran & his dog were saved from a flood

You’ve probably seen the devastating effects of Hurricane Matthew all over the news. But thanks to social media and the kindness of a caring stranger, a miracle happened in Hope Mills, North Carolina.

Among the places hit the hardest, this town was severely flooded. Veteran Chris Williams and his dog, Lana, were trapped in their house as water began to fill each room.

Knowing that he was in trouble, Chris’ brother, Craig, started to worry. Unfortunately, Craig lives in Texas, and the only thing he could do was try to offer his brother some comic relief.

Craig searched #HopeMills on Twitter and found photos of houses, submerged in brown floodwaters nearly up to their roofs. As a joke, he shared this photo with Chris, teasing him and saying something along the lines of, “at least this isn’t you!”…

Only, it was him–in the submerged house on the right, to be exact! When Craig realized that the house in the picture was his brother’s, the one with the single blue shutter, he was desperate to get him help. Emergency crews were inundated with calls, and were having a hard time reaching people in the massive flooding. Afraid that his brother and the pup were running out of time, Craig messaged the man who’d posted the picture.

He went on to explain to @imsofirst that Chris was trapped in the house with his senior dog, who couldn’t swim.

As it turned out, the man behind the social media handle is director and filmmaker Quavas Hart, who had taken the photo with his drone. When he received the plea for help, he immediately jumped into action. With the drone, he caught the attention of a rescue crew in the area and let them know where Chris and Lana were located. Shortly after, the two were rescued.

“It was a blessing, you know…knowing that someone made it out alive,” said Quavas in an interview by KHOU.

“I didn’t think there were people like that anymore,” said Chris of Quavas’ selfless deed in the same interview.

The news story went on to explain that Craig wants to thank his brother’s rescuer by taking him out to a nice dinner the next time he’s visiting North Carolina.
