The media has been filled with tragedies, including a shooting in Texas earlier this month. Five police officers gave their lives while on the line of duty, protecting protesters.
In an interview by WFAA 8, Bill Connor, who’s homeless, recalls the kindness and compassion that one of the fallen officers showed to him and his dog. Because of their shared love for canines, the two formed a friendship.
Officer Lorne Ahrens befriended Connor when he expressed concern for his Pit Bull, Gracie. A Pittie owner himself, the officer always made sure Gracie had enough to eat. He regularly brought kibble for the pup, and made sure Connor didn’t go hungry by buying him food.
Knowing that Connor had little to care for himself, let alone a dog, Officer Ahrens–nicknamed “Meat”–made a promise to help them if they were ever in trouble.
“He said if there’s anything that dog ever needs, you just tell any Dallas cop that Meat said get it and I’ll pay that cop back,” Connor said in the interview.

And Ahrens kept his word. Recently, Connor got arrested, which meant Gracie had to be taken to the pound. When Connor was released from jail, he went to get Gracie, and found that she’d been spayed, microchipped, and treated for fleas. The problem? He had to pay for the treatments in order to get his dog back.

Connor couldn’t afford the fee, so Ahrens foot the bill, just like he said he would. And that meant the world to a man who’s most loyal companion and “prized possession” is his dog.
“I didn’t know [Officer Ahrens] was dead. I know we’re not supposed to question God’s word, but man.. He’s confusing,” said a tearful Connor in the news story.

What a beautiful story of how a little compassion can make such a huge impact in someone else’s life. Rest in peace Officer Ahrens, the sacrifice given by you and your family will not be forgotten.
