Most people are aware of the usual heroic jobs dogs perform on a daily basis. Roles with the police force, fire stations, and service animals have become the norm. What about the more unusual working dog? Listed below are five careers that utilize all a canine has to offer, in the most obscure ways.
Whale Poop Sniffer
Someone has to do it. Researchers rely on whale waste to study diet, health, and migration. Waste provides a wealth of information, if they can obtain it. That’s where Tucker comes in. Tucker, a black Labrador Retriever, has been specially trained to sniff out the elusive whale scat, Orca specific feces, from all over the world.
Illegal Wildlife Detective
Poachers beware: dogs are trained to sniff out illegal wildlife that is being smuggled in. Many species of wild life are teetering on the brink of extinction, in part due to poachers smuggling in exotic animals, with eyes of selling them as private pets. Four retrievers are based in key ports around the United States waiting to pounce on unsuspecting smugglers.
Hypnotist

Dogs are capable of lulling unsuspecting humans into hypnotic trances? Not so surprising, many dog enthusiasts have fallen victim to the soulful stare, with a pitiful voice resounding in their heads “Just one more treat? Please?” One of the more famous Hypno-dogs is Oscar, a black lab that was rescued by a stage hypnotist. During a performance, the showman brought his puppy on stage and was amazed that Oscar stared at a girl in the audience, long enough to put her into a trance. Oscar performed for close to twelve years until his eyesight failed him. Today Oscar has paved the way for more canines to place humans under their command.
Politics

If it works for Vladimir Putin, having his dog Koni on hand as a political strategist for meetings with his advisors and heads of state, why not get the rest of the canine community involved in the political landscape. Rabbit Hash, KY elected its first canine mayor in 1998 and since then, the office has been held by three different canines. The current mayor, a Border Collie named Lucy Lou, goes to city hall every day to greet tourists and pose for pictures.
Some canine careers have fallen out of fashion such as milk cart driving or puffin pulling, but the above mentioned jobs seem to have staying power. Dogs are smart, most are easily trainable and need the mental stimulation of a challenging job. What the future holds for the canine workforce is anyone’s guess.
