As silly as it sounds, and as beautiful these dogs actually are both inside and out, contests just like this weekend’s 18th Annual Del Mar Kiwanis Ugly Dog Contest are gaining in popularity around the country as a unique way to come together and raise awareness and funds for various charities, rescue organizations, and other good causes. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for people to spend a day with their pets.

While 60 different dogs entered the competition, only 6 of them were a part of the “ugly dog” category. The others competed in such groups as cutest, best costume, best tricks, and most unusual markings.

“The dogs may appear ugly in the beginning, but they’re not. They’re beautiful inside. And everyone has so much fun just being out here. it’s a wonderful day and it’s all for charity,” said Dane Andrew, Rascal’s owner.

Money raised in the San Diego Ugly Dog Contest was donated to the Rady Children’s Hospital.
