When a 1-year-old German Shepherd named Luna first fell off a fishing boat, her owner was sure she’d survived. As it turns out, fisherman Nick Hayworth really knew his pup. She was found by Navy officials on a small island off the coast of San Diego, California over a month after she went missing.

Sandy DeMunnik, public affairs officer for the US Navy’s Naval Base Coronado, told ABC News about their initial search.

“[Owner Hayworth] told us Luna was a very powerful swimmer and that he was 90 percent sure she’d head to shore. So our staff searched the island, but with no luck. He stayed in the area for two more days to look for her, and after a week, we considered her lost at sea and presumed dead,” she said in the article.

But on Tuesday morning (March 15th), Navy staff were shocked to see the domesticated animal on the remote island. Figuring out who she belonged to, they contacted Hayworth right away.

“[He] was actually out in the middle of a lake with horrible reception when he got the news. He had to do all sorts of acrobats to get a signal, but he was ecstatic–jumping up and down,” DeMunnik told ABC.

A biologist examined Luna and determined that she had survived off of eating mice during the time she was missing. She was slightly undernourished, but otherwise, in good health.

As Hayworth is currently out of town, his best friend picked up Luna to look after her until her owner returns home. We bet he can’t get to this blue-eyed beauty soon enough!
