In her short two-year life, Chi Chi the Yellow Lab has experienced her share of horrors.

She was found in a trashcan in Korea. After being bound at the ankles, hung upside-down, and stuffed with food to “fatten her up,” her legs became very infected.

Regarded as “rotten meat,” she was literally thrown away, considered garbage despite the fact that she was still alive.

“Most dog meat butchers believe that pain caused by torture, such as binding their legs, will make their meat more tender,” explains a video by Animal Rescue, Media, & Education (ARME), the animal welfare organization who aided in Chi Chi’s recovery.

By the time she was found, infection spread throughout her body, and vets had no choice but to amputate all four legs. They weren’t sure if she would even survive.

But she did. And even more miraculously, Chi Chi–meaning “loving” in Korean–remained happy, energetic, and of course, ever lovable.

“She survived and the day after surgery she was trying to walk. She was smiling and wagging her tail…Then, a couple days later, she even started walking on her little stumps,” said ARME president Shannon Keith in an article by The Dodo.

Not only does the intrepid Lab love to walk, she runs and plays, just like any other dog. And now, she is in her forever home, living with the Howell family in Arizona!
No strangers to rescuing, the Howells have two Beagles adopted through The Beagle Project, an organization that saves the docile dogs from the torment of laboratory research. Chi Chi loves her new furry siblings!
