Recovering rescue dog has something to smile about

Herbert the rescue pup is recovering from the dog flu in a lovely foster home, and that gives him something to smile about.

This optimistic sweetheart is a five-month-old American Staffordshire mix, who poses like a pro for the camera. Having been rescued from a city shelter by PAWS Chicago–whose slogan is “Building No Kill Communities!”–no wonder this positive pooch can’t help but smile!

In an article by ABC7 News, PAWS Chicago spokesperson Sarah McDonald said that it was evident Herbert was not cared for in his former home. “He displayed all the signs that whatever his upbringing, he appeared to be kept in a cage,” she says.

McDonald also pointed out that flu-infected dogs must be isolated to avoid spreading the illness, and that’s where PAWS Chicago comes in- they place sick pups in foster homes where they can be nursed back to health, safely and lovingly. As a bonus for the deserving pups, they get to savor some time being a spoiled “only child,” as they must recover in homes without other animals.

Right now, Herbert is living the high life with his foster parents. And aside from being an amazing caretaker, we can thank foster mom Amanda Robles for capturing this puppy’s hilarious and heartwarming trick on camera. The original video has gone viral, being shared and “liked” hundreds of thousands of times and has had over eleven million views. (Because, who wouldn’t want to see a smiling puppy?)

Although the pup’s recovery has put him off the radar for a short amount of time, McDonald said that Herbert has begun and continues to be socialized. “He’s really come out of his shell wonderfully,” she says.

Once Herbert is fully healed, he’ll be up for adoption, and he’s expected to be ready within the next two weeks. Says the video caption on the PAWS Chicago Facebook Page, “While in foster, he’s learning how to be a puppy, getting lots of cuddles, and working on training. Keep an eye out for him at https://bit.ly/PAWSCAdopt.”

We have no doubts that Herbert is going to find his forever home in the very near future!
