Formerly feral dog tenderly rescues a tiny hummingbird–now, they’re inseparable!

This is an incredible story you have to see to believe, and even then you may question how it is possible.

Animal lover Ed Gernon rescued a feral dog and has worked hard on teaching Rex how to be a calm, relaxed, canine good citizen. Just a year later, Rex had a chance to “paw-it-forward” when he and his human stumbled upon a dying hummingbird while out on a walk.

The hummingbird was lying on the sidewalk and covered in ants when they discovered her. Gernon was sure she was dead.

But he saw that Rex was trying to protect the poor creature, so he couldn’t leave her behind. Instead, he took the hummingbird with him and nursed her back to health, carefully feeding her sugar syrup from a tiny vial.

Hummer, as she has been named, developed a strong bond with Rex. Gernon says she never leaves the dog’s side.

On a YouTube video, Gernon said, “as Hummer was perfecting her flying skills…she developed a total crush on Rex. Wherever he was, she wanted to be close by. She even started bathing in his water bowl, killing time while he ate before she’d start playing with him again. So strange, but amazing.”

Gernon leaves the windows open, knowing that soon it will be time for Hummer to mate and she will leave them. Until then, Rex spends a lot of time with her, and Gernon will have some amazing memories to look back on. You can see more of his videos with Hummer (include her sleeping on his nose!) on his YouTube channel.

Interestingly, this is not the first dog-hummingbird love story. Last year, another YouTube video came out about a hummingbird that was near death and was rescued by a human, only to develop a strong bond with the person’s dog. After nursing the hummingbird back to health, which in this case only took 45 minutes, the bird has continued to visit the yard, and her dog barks every time that particular bird comes to visit.

Once she leaves, hopefully Hummer will be back to visit!
