The life of a stray dog is truly tragic. Wandering aimlessly in search of safety and survival, thousands of these dogs are left scared and vulnerable on the streets, left with little hope. Stray dogs come from a variety of circumstances- irresponsible pet owners who got overwhelmed by the level of commitment required to raising an animal, abusive owners or neglectful breeders. And some, like the dogs you’re about to meet, end up homeless and terrified as the result of an already horrific experience: dog fighting.

Michigan Humane Society’s Cruelty Investigations team works hard to locate and rescue the struggling, abandoned dogs in their communities. After hearing of suspicious activity in and around an abandoned house in a Detroit neighborhood, Animal Cops Mark Ramos and David McLeod wasted no time heading to the endangered animals. What they found was horrific.
Left with barely any shelter or food, the dogs on the property were exposed to dangerous electrical wires, and their extensive injuries suggested and they were being used as bait dogs. So disgusting.

Ramos and McLeod rescued a total of 5 dogs that day, including a female who it seems was being abused as a breeder. Each of the dogs received medical attention and, despite initial confusion and aggression, quickly warmed up to the humans who had helped them. What these poor pups endured at that house is unbearable, but the good news is that they finally have a second chance at a happy, safe life.

These sweet dogs were conditioned into a life of violence and desperation…it’s no wonder they are initially confused and aggressive toward the idea of freedom. Organizers of dog fighting are dangerous, cruel and downright terrifying. Unfortunately, a lot of people assume those characteristics apply to the enslaved dogs who participate, too. Let us know your thoughts on dog fighting as a whole and on the video!
