Electronics sniffing dog helps nab jared the subway guy in child pornography case
There are just 4 dogs in the United States that are specially trained to sniff out and locate electronics and one of them, a 2-year old Lab named Bear, played a crucial role in the child pornography investigation against former Subway spokesperson, Jared Fogle.
Bear’s sense of smell is so keen, the working dog can find computer drives, ipads, hidden thumb drives, even memory cards stashed deep in drawers.
Last month, Bear and his trainer Todd Jordan were hired to search the home of Jared Fogle. Officials said Bear indeed found devices in Fogle’s home that assisted in the investigation.
“It’s just like any other K-9 training, like with the narcotics or explosives or anything,” Jordan explained to WDTN. “You get the dog used to the odor and reward them as they indicate on it.”
Bear’s reward is food. Jordan keeps a pouch of dog food with him as he guides the dog around the search area.
After a successful raid at Fogle’s property, the Seattle Police Department reached out. The law enforcement agency will become Bear’s new home, with the Seattle PD hoping he’ll help nab more criminals like Fogle.
While his trainer is going to miss him terribly, he knows Bear is going on to serve an important purpose.
“It’ll be bittersweet,” he said. “It’s sad to see him go, but the type of work he’s doing, it’s very rewarding.”
Jordan is in the process of training two more dogs for electronic-sniffing work.
