Video: Caged puppies on car roof in Akron triggers dozens of 911 calls

After multiple calls to 911 by concerned travelers on Friday, police in Akron, Ohio were able to locate and pull over a mini van with a crate full of terrified puppies strapped to the roof.

A man, his wife, and their four children, all under the age of 5, rode comfortably inside the van. After being pulled over, the driver told police, “We had more important things to put inside the vehicle. We have four children,” reported Ohio.com.

No charges were filed against the man driving 50 miles-per-hour with four 3-month old pups crated atop the van.

“He had absolutely no idea what he was doing was wrong,” Beitzel said. “In this case, the cultural issues, he now knows that this is absolutely not the way to transport puppies. The puppies are traumatized, but I think they’ll come around with a little love and attention.”

The family were Mennonites from Nova, Ohio, making the 300-mile trek to rehome the mixed-breed puppies with family in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

The driver turned all four puppies over to the county’s dog warden. The puppies will be seen by a veterinarian and, once cleared, will be available for adoption through the Humane Society of Greater Akron.
