The 12 dogs of christmas: meet louie, in rescue for 680 days

It’s the holidays! The time of year for families to gather together to celebrate traditions, share memories, and make new ones. This year, as you surround yourself with family and friends, both two-legged and four-legged alike, remember there are millions of dogs in shelters, patiently waiting for a family of their own.

For some, this won’t be their first, second, or even their third Christmas behind bars.

It’s our Christmas wish that every dog in rescue would find a home for the holidays, so we’ve selected 12 special dogs from around the country that have been overlooked time and time again. Some are senior dogs, some have special needs, and some are passed over for reasons we simply can’t understand – but, they all deserve to spend the holidays with a family of their own.

We’re calling this the 12 Dogs of Christmas. The Dogington Post along with our friends at Wellness have joined forces to introduce you to 12 needy dogs in hopes that they’ll finally get noticed…and maybe get a home for the holidays!

Meet Louie!

louie7-53354680 days ago, Officer Louie Rivera heard a frantic call over his radio of a woman screaming that a dog was drowning in a lake behind their neighborhood. There were sea walls, so there was no way for the dog to escape. Officer Rivera rushed to the scene, and he, along with the woman who called, jumped in and assisted in saving the dog’s life.

Once on land, it was obvious to Officer Rivera that this dog had endured a very rough life, and was probably thrown in the lake. He contacted 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida who immediately told him to bring the dog to them for medical care.

louieears-64296The rescue saw how thin he was, that he was missing patches of hair, he had sores and callouses everywhere, and – probably most disturbing – he had scars around both of his ears. The rescue learned later those scars were likely the result of someone using an old technique of rubber banding the ears to make them die and fall of, instead of clipping them.

Luckily Louie, who was named after his rescuer, still has his ears.

Sadly, after his medical work-up, the rescue learned it wasn’t just visible damage that Louie had endured, but he was also Heartworm positive. 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades worked very hard to not only win Louie’s trust, but to heal his body and his heart. He endured months of treatment for the Heartworm, but Louie is now Heartworm free!

louie3-31630Louie is a big, goofy, calm, sweet, couch potato who LOVES his squeaky toys and just wants a couch and a family of his very own. There’s no explanation as to why it is taking so long for his angel to come! Louie would make an amazing companion for any man, woman, or family. We can only guess that maybe due to his size, or that he must be an only animal in the home, are the only things holding him back.

Louie went into a temporary foster for a long weekend over a Holiday because the boarding facility would be closed, and his foster said he was an absolutely perfect dog, an easy dog, and she loved having him there.

Volunteers go everyday to the rescue facility to take Louie for a walk, or play with him in the yard, but that is NO LIFE for him, especially after 680 days. Please help Louie find his angel. He’s watched hundreds of dogs come and go since he’s been there… its his turn…Louie needs a forever home.

For more than 680 days now, Louie has lived within the walls of a boarding facility that takes exceptional care of him – but he’s ready for a home of his own, a family of his own.

Louie will soon face his second Christmas without a family.
