It’s the holidays! The time of year for families to gather together to celebrate traditions, share memories, and make new ones. This year, as you surround yourself with family and friends, both two-legged and four-legged alike, remember there are millions of dogs in shelters, patiently waiting for a family of their own.

For some, this won’t be their first, second, or even their third Christmas behind bars.

It’s our Christmas wish that every dog in rescue would find a home for the holidays, so we’ve selected 12 special dogs from around the country that have been overlooked time and time again. Some are senior dogs, some have special needs, and some are passed over for reasons we simply can’t understand – but, they all deserve to spend the holidays with a family of their own.

We’re calling this the 12 Dogs of Christmas. The Dogington Post along with our friends at Wellness have joined forces to introduce you to 12 needy dogs in hopes that they’ll finally get noticed…and maybe get a home for the holidays!

Meet Brittany!

Brittany is a Pit Bull who was rescued from the city’s high-kill shelter by Saving Grace Pit Bull Rescue in Lubbock, Texas more than 5 years ago!

Brittany’s story isn’t a shocking case of neglect or some horrific headline in the news, but it doesn’t make her journey any less heartbreaking. She was relinquished by her owner who could no longer care for her, although the life she lived wasn’t a good one to begin with. Brittany has probably never known a true home life – cuddling on the couch, the warmth of a human’s love, the security of a house protecting her from the outside elements. She has now been with Saving Grace for more than 5 years, longing for someone to choose her to become part of a family. She deserves a forever home.

Brittany7Brittany has waited a long time for a home of her own. The one thing that usually gets in the way is the fact that she needs to be an only pet. As much as she adores humans, she is not as fond of other animals.

As she has gotten older, she is very calm and downright lazy – but she is also less inclined to put up with another animal. Brittany would do best with someone that is familiar with the bully breed tendencies, and someone that is prepared to be a responsible Pit Bull owner. She deserves the best, and that means not being set up for failure by trying to make her be something she’s not.

Brittany is not a dog that you can take to an off leash dog park, or doggy day care with other dogs. Her limitations need to be respected so that she can shine as the wonderful dog she is.

She’s strong and a little on the chunky side, but she is a great walker. She enjoys the time outside of her kennel when the volunteers take her on long walks. Her greatest dream is to spend her days resting comfortably in a home, safely secured indoors away from harm, and giving all her unconditional love to her forever family.

Brittany is currently in the care of Saving Grace Pit Bull Rescue, which was founded by a group of friends that saw a strong need for Pit Bull advocates in our community. The Lubbock, TX animal shelter takes in close to 2,000 Pit Bulls each year and euthanizes approximately 80% of Pit Bulls that arrive at the shelter. Overpopulation, abandonment, homelessness, discrimination, and cruelty are all serious issues facing this breed in Lubbock and across the nation.

Brittany will soon face yet another Christmas without a family.

Does Brittany seem like the perfect fit for your family? Here’s how to begin the adoption process:

Saving Grace Pit Bull Rescue’s mission is the following:
– Alleviate suffering through rescue and adoption into loving, stable, reliable forever homes
– Assist the city shelter with Pit Bulls as resources allow
– Provide breed specific education to the community with emphasis on the importance of spay/neuter, microchipping, anti-chaining, and breed perception
– As finances allow, provide resources for members of our community that own Pit Bulls including spay/neuter, microchips, and vaccinations
– Our principal aim for our shelter dogs is maintenance of their quality of life while they are with us. Our ultimate goal for our rescues is adoption. Rescue does not end when the dog is safely at our facility, but when the dog finds a stable, loving, forever home. Life in a shelter is very difficult and not ideal for dogs. Dogs are social and emotional creatures. We believe their basic needs go beyond food, water, a roof, and a bed. We believe dogs need daily interaction, training and mental stimulation, and physical exercise while in our care- which makes them more adoptable and more likely to succeed in a home once they are adopted.
– We envision a time when loving and protective homes are in ample supply for Pit Bulls and they are no longer subjected to discrimination and cruelty because they are misunderstood and forgotten. We understand there is much controversy surrounding this breed. Our belief here at Saving Grace is that quality education about the Pit Bull will inspire hope and promote change. We seek to communicate openly about issues and concerns in regard to Pit Bulls. We do not promote hatred and disrespect. Change through education, open dialogue, and partnership with other community agencies is one of our primary goals.
